For erstwhile "new country" outsider Shania Twain, the commercial impact of her first live video doubtless carries the sweet smell of revenge. Twain's mid-'90s breakthrough, fueled by formidable production polish and carefully groomed videos, conspicuously delayed live shows until long after the expatriate Canadian's success crossed into platinum territory--an omission that prompted some skeptics to theorize that the would-be megastar's talent was accomplished through studio legerdemain. Shania Twain Live may benefit from plenty of polish and more than a little calculation in its staging, but the singer-songwriter's long apprenticeship in lounge bands and resort revues north of the border is apparent. Whether one loves or loathes her songs, Twain herself comes across as a seasoned performer who knows how to work the audience.

Equally apparent, and equally unlikely to resolve the division between fans and foes, is Twain's crossover agenda. Scaled for the arenas that Twain and her handlers targeted early on, the concert is closer in pace and power-chords to a mainstream rock show than most country acts, an orientation that aligns the star with Garth Brooks's swaggering attack rather than most country songstresses. Her band may boast three fiddlers, but their slashing attack emulates the kilowatt buzz of the rock guitarists that share the scrim, who pull off familiar string-bending flourishes. As for the front woman, in her electric-green leopard-print top, hip-hugging pants, and meticulously permed, waist-length hair, she resembles some improbably aerobicized white Rastafarian.

The set list is a generous one, reproducing most of Twain's back-to-back platinum albums, and illustrates her skill at mixing melting ballads, flirtatious rockers that enable her to strut her physical beauty, and songs testifying to her self-reliance. Still, for all Twain's assertions that she won't suffer fools gladly, the songs ultimately reveal a traditional romanticism with a moderate, post-feminist spark. One need only check out the power equation behind such songs as "Honey, I'm Home" and "Any Man of Mine" to recognize Twain's themes are ultimately much older than their crossover wrappers. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars the country music goddess from Ontario   May 1, 2004

Shania fans will love this concert, which is just wall-to-wall music. It is not what I expected to see at all; it has no lavish costume changes, no razzle-dazzle, no huge production numbers...just Shania, with her large and accomplished band, who play brilliantly for her, singing song after song.
She wears a chartreuse and black exercise outfit for the first hour, black pants and a leopard print jacket in the second half, with a jacket change for the last four songs. With little make-up and no jewelry, her beauty is spectacular.

    The song list is:
1: "Man ! I Feel Like a Woman". '99 Grammy Award for Best Female Vocal Country Performance.
    2: "Honey, I'm Home"
    3: "You Win My Love"
4: "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under ?"
5: "You're Still the One". '98 Grammy Award for Best Female Vocal Country Performance and Best Country Song.
    6: "I Won't Leave You Lonely"
7: "Come On Over". '99 Grammy Award for Best Country Song.
8: "Love Gets Me Every Time"
9: "I'm Holding on to Love (to Save My Life)"
    10: "When"
11: Medley: "Home Ain't Where His Heart Is (Anymore)" / "The Woman in Me (Needs the Man in You)" / "You've Got a Way"
12: "That Don't Impress Me Much"
13: "If It Don't Take Two"
    14: "Black Eyes, Blue Tears"
15: "God Bless the Child". Proceeds for this song go to her favorite charity, Kid's Cafe.
16: "To Daddy". This is a clip of Shania singing when she was about 10.
17: "What Made You Say That" is sung by 8 year old Cailey Ervin.
18: "No One Needs to Know"
    19: "Any Man of Mine"
20: "Don't be Stupid (You Know I Love You)". There are some dancers that do a jig on this one.
    21: "From This Moment On"
22: "(If You're Not in it for Love) I'm Outta Here !". This is terrific; a band of young drummers join her for this great song.
23: "Any Man of Mine" (reprise)
    24: "Rock This Country"
Total running time is 2 hours.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Performance   April 9, 2000

The Music: Fantastic! Shania has an excellent live voice, and can see she really enjoys performing live to her fans. She is not the only person on stage having a great time, her musicians are constantly surrounding her playing their violins, guitars etc. and musically this video is a MUST for anyone who likes the music of Shania Twain.

Visually: A lot of concerts consist of a band at the back and the singers at the front doing what they do, and to watch on television can be a little disappointing. This concert, is extremely entertaining from beginning to end and won't leave you bored for a moment.

Highlights: Footage is shown of Shania when she was about 10 years of age singing. During the concert, we see just how lovely a person Shania is when she has a couple of young children on stage with her dancing with her. The whole concert is a highlight, it's fantastic and very entertaining.

Criticism: Basically I have none, except she gets a man on stage with her during my favorite song 'Dont Be Stupid' and he's REALLY annoying!

    5 out of 5 stars Shania Twain - WOW!   January 10, 2000

I thought the DVD was very good. The sound quality is excellent. I am using a Sony DVD player ran through a Yamaha digital amp. I also have center channel audio. Now, to the video. It is 2 hours of really good stuff. Shania and her band are very energetic. Shania is a fan pleaser and gets her fans involved in her show. She is truly a remarkable person and hasn't forgotten her roots. She cares about the "little" people and I can't wait till her next addition is released.

Great DVD of a great performer! For those of you who may have audio problems...When I first received the DVD from Amazon I played it on the DVD drive on my PC with two stereo speakers. The sound quality was not very good and Shania's vocals were washed out, as if the center channel audio was missing. I then played it on my Toshiba 2109 DVD player with the sound set at two channel analog and through a Dolby Pro Logic amplifier and the center channel sound (with Shania's lovely voice) was excellent. Try playing around with your DVD player's audio setting.

I have seen five (5) Shania Twain concerts. This video helps me re-live each and every one of them. I cannot get enough of her performances. I even made a cassette tape of the video so I could listen to the live music in my car. SHANIA is absolutely the hottest, sexiest, most beautiful woman in the music business to date. If you get this video, you may as well get the other videos to have a complete collection. "The Woman In Me" "Behind the Scenes" "Come On Over"
