Taped live in Rome and originally broadcast on Cinemax in 1989, this hourlong reunion of rock legends duplicates an all-star lineup as it might have appeared at the famous Apollo theater in the late 1950s. Here on one stage are the greatest blues-based musicians who built the solid foundation of rock & roll, all African American with the exception of Jerry Lee Lewis, and all showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. Belting out 15 songs followed by an all-star jam, all seven of these musical icons are in peak form here, and their collective energy indicates that this night, on stage before a packed house of surprisingly young and wildly enthusiastic Italians, was a special one for everyone involved. The visuals are routine--consisting of thorough but otherwise unremarkable multicamera coverage--but the music (with just a few minor feedback problems) is outstanding, and the pace is so breathtaking you'll almost forget Chuck Berry's conspicuous absence.

Anonymously deferring to his musical idols, Dave Edmunds shines as the architect of this spectacular concert. With a fantastic band assembled for this occasion, Edmunds provides most of the concert's ace guitar work, his Fender Strat urging everyone (especially Jerry Lee) to rock as if they hadn't aged a day in 30 years. You'll never mistake this for a tired nostalgia tour; fueled by the vitality of their appreciative audience, these veteran rockers put on a show that's as good as or better than any they'd ever done before. --Jeff Shannon

This hour long set is HIGH ENERGY all the way! Producer Dave Edmunds winds up these aging superstars and lets em boogie out! From the opening note to the close there isn't a weak link in the party! This was filmed in Italy in the late 1980's and all those involved make this concert relevant for the time. It just goes to show how timeless these guys are. Buy this set and revel in the glory and joy of it all!A must have dvd for any music collector.

5 out of 5 stars Far Above Average Live "Oldies"   February 19, 2001
Hats off to the producers of this show. Somehow they got seven legends together, and mostly got the most out of them! James Brown opens the show with solid renditions of "Papa's...Bag" and "I Feel Good", featuring high-energy choreography, and (believe it or not!) Mr. Maceo Parker!! Bo Diddley provides the best "I'm A Man" I've ever heard; Ray Charles offers an amazing "Mess Around" - one of the great moments in music history captured on tape. The lesser-discussed uptempo item is a true time-capsule entry! Fats Domino overcomes voice problems with "I'm Ready" - another under-played Fats number given solid support. (Dave Edmunds' band is "up" for this gig, no doubt.) And please note Mr. Lee Allen on sax! Little Richard's voice problems are reported to be the result of extensive carrying on between his first two songs, one reported to be his magnificent (still unreleased) country ballad "No Place Like Home", leading to halfway blown-out tonsils and a struggle to get through "Great Gosh A'Mighty". Once he gets in gear he's great, but what a shame if his clowning dictated the edit of a "new" and hitworthy LR tune. Jerry Lee Lewis, on the contrary is all business, offering three songs including "The Wild One (Real Wild Child)". B.B. King gives us two numbers including "How Blue Can You Get?", an exceptionally strong rendition. The "All-Star Jam" does not appear to have been rehearsed, and it works well. All the starts contribute and Richard gets a chance to partially redeem himself.

5 out of 5 stars These stars are spell binding in any time, for any age.   April 18, 2005

"Time enduring" is what you would call these magnetic and energetic super stars. Every one of them is great and performs some of their best music. I was suprised that the show stopper was - Jerry Lee Lewis.
