Amazon.com "Independence Day," a stirring tale of spousal abuse and retribution, is the heart of Martina McBride's Greatest Hits Video Collection. Shot in stark black and white, it's a perfect marriage of her powerful voice and social consciousness and was the 1994 Country Music Association Video of the Year. Other highlights on this first-rate collection include the similarly themed "A Broken Wing," her breakthrough Top 10 hit "My Baby Loves Me" (which reinforces the theme of unconditional love by featuring real-life couples), "Love's the Only House" with Cirque du Soleil, and the 2001 hit "When God-Fearin' Women Get the Blues." At 11 tracks and 44 minutes, this is quite a bit shorter than the 19-song companion CD, but you do get two songs not on the CD, "The Time Has Come" and "Cheap Whiskey." Plus, you'll probably find that getting to look into McBride's bluer than blue eyes is a pretty good tradeoff. --David Horiuchi

Good music; well-produced videos; run-time is too short March 3, 2002 J. Lizzi (Costa Mesa, CA) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
For a compilation of Martina McBride's greatest hits, it seems odd to me that six albums worth of music could only produce the eleven videos found on this DVD (two are even listed as "bonus" tracks). Everything on this disc is enjoyable, but I wish there were more songs . . . As with most music DVDs, I purchased this not only as a collector's item, but also to learn more about the artist and what went into creating the music videos. I give a solid A-rating to the songs and the quality of the videos, with special note to the outstanding imagery and story-telling in "Independence Day," "Wild Angels," "A Broken Wing," "Love's the Only House," and "Cheap Whiskey." I wasn't a big Martina McBride fan before I bought this DVD, but I'm more of one now. Aside from the too-small sampling of videos, a couple other minor disappointments keep me from giving a 5-star rating. I looked around for any information about who directed the videos, and where and when they were filmed. All I found (even in the liner notes) was "various original producers" and "various video directors." I really thought many of the videos were brilliant; I can't believe there were no credits for them. Also, the "Greatest Hits" CD has many more songs besides those included on the DVD. I'm not sure what the reasoning was in leaving so many "hits" off of the video collection, but I expected that the listed songs would be the same. Did the missing songs not have videos? The option of watching the tracks with or without the commentary between them is a good feature. The CMT interview footage with Martina is okay, but some "behind the scenes" footage would have added another great dimension that is lacking here. Overall, this is a good DVD that I would recommend to just about anyone, especially fans of Martina.
The DVD and the CD do not contain the same songs January 8, 2003 20 out of 22 found this review helpful
Don't be fooled thinking that the CD and DVD (which both use the same cover picture) contain the same songs. There are eight songs on the Greatest Hits CD that are not on the DVD. The songs that are not on the DVD are: Strangers Valentine Happy Girl I Love You There You Are Where Would You Be Concrete Angel BlessedAdditionaly, there are two videos on the DVD that are not on the CD. They are, "The Time Has Come" and "Cheap Whiskey". I am not pleased that both the CD and DVD do not have the same song list, as I bought the DVD for one video that was not on it. However, Martina is still a great singer and the DVD, despite not having all of the videos is still a must have for Martina fans.
A must for any Martina McBride Fan September 19, 2001 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
This DVD contains just about all of Martina Mcbride's videos, covering all her albums. The DVD has great video and great sound. The special features includes the ability to hear Martina talk about the video before each video and a Discography with links to play the videos for the songs on the albums (if one of the 11 videos on the DVD)The videos are My baby loves me Life #9 Independance Day Safe in the arms of love Wild Angels A broken wing Whatever you say Love's the only house When God-Fearin women get the blues The Time has come Cheap Whiskey There are a few tracks from her greatest hit album that do not have video and are therefore not on the DVD.
Silly Reviews July 17, 2003 Kimball W. Waites (Washington) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I find it very odd that so many have complained about the fact that certain songs did not make it onto this video collection. The obvious reason for three of the songs lies in the fact that their videos were not filmed (let alone released) when this collection came out. Strangers, too, was never released as a single, and so has no corresponding video. While other videos should, perhaps, have made it onto this disc (Wrong Again, There You Are, Valentine, etc) there is no reason to believe that the cover art work was used to obfuscate the disparity in songs between the CD and the DVD. A simple perusal of the contents of the DVD would have sufficed to inform you that the DVD did not contain all that the CD did.Martina's work has always been characterized by a desire to present a coherent artisitic package. That, perhaps, may account for the lack of certain videos from the collection. In any case, the collection should be judged on the basis of what it contains, and it contains some very good work from the two-time reigning CMA Female Vocalist. Not only does Martina provide us with beautiful music performed in her peerless tones, she provides videos which are generally stunning visually and which carry a message to the viewer. This is a wonderful production.
Two thumbs waaaay up! December 16, 2001 K. Stuckey (Port Huron, MI USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
A collection of music videos on DVD is a great idea for any artist, but none more deserving than Martina McBride. This is an excellent way to watch whichever Martina video you want, whenever you want, not just when the music video channels feel like playing them. Martina's interviews are great and really make the DVD much more than just a video collection.
