    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.com
Featurettes from the decade-old Hard and Heavy program are collected on Rockthology, volume 2 of which stars metal giants Ozzy Osbourne, Lita Ford, Scorpions, Yngwie Malmsteen, Judas Priest, Ronnie James Dio, German goddess Doro, and progressive-metallers Queensryche. The 5- to 15-minute episodes showcase band member interviews, snippets from video clips, and occasional in-studio or at-home footage. Highlights are Ozzy discussing his partnership with late guitarist Randy Rhoads, Priest's Rob Halford admitting his anger over the infamous trial accusing their music of causing a teenager's death, and Queensryche's members hoping their music will make listeners aware of political and environmental concerns. Otherwise, this ragtag, 80-minute collection isn't thorough enough to satisfy longtime fans and is too "inside" to attract new ones. Cutting between interviews and video clips kills the chance to enjoy either, and the shortest segments (on Malmsteen and Doro) are so superficial they'll disappoint everyone. --Kevin Filipski

    1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected   August 10, 2003

A DVD more about the making of the videos, minus the complete videos. Lousy audio. I guess I can use it as a gag gift for Christmas.

I bought it to see the old videos, but they only play about 10 seconds of the video and the rest is comintary.

2 out of 5 stars Very Cheesy   August 6, 2003

I bought it because I am a fan of Priest, Malmsteen and Dio and thought I would get some of the videos that MTV used to play. Tough luck! The videos are constantly interrupted by interview segments. The interviews are annoying to because they are not serious interviews but puff pieces conducted to give viewers an "insider" view of the stars' lifestyle. Do I really care about Dio's pool table? Not quite.

The video is really dated, too, which makes it unintentionally funny. One of the video segments for Doro was shot on some rocks by the ocean and there is a shot of this guy who looks exactly like Fabio playing a bass standing on the rocks (without a shirt of course) in the middle of nowhere. It's kind of like hair metal meets the Harlequin romance novel.

Then there is Malmsteen's band doing its best Warrant impression. One of the best guitar players in the world sinking to the level of Cherry Pie.

On the good side. Lita Ford was always a looker who could belt out a good tune and is in fine form here. But once again, the chopped up video editing style doesn't do her justice.

Some of the interviews revealed some interesting information that I didn't know before but for the most part they are way short on substance.

When this was originally filmed (the video doesn't say but it is obviously 89-90) hair metal posturing was pounding the final nails into the coffin of mainstream metal. Some people blame grunge but Rockthology proves we have no one to blame but ourselves.

1 out of 5 stars Not for you if you are looking for *un-interrupted* videos   March 15, 2006

I don't know what it is about people who produce these compilations. They seem to be convinced that us video music fans simply prefer to have people TALKING ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE VIDEOS!
I've got an idea, how about a separate section on the disc for interviews??? - Ya think these discs might actually sell???
I bought this thinking the interviews were separate from the videos and for about 6.00 used, how could anyone go wrong?
In short, if you are looking for the actual, complete, *un-interrupted* videos (or interviews) from these artists, save your money.
AMAZON - PLEASE TAKE GREATER TIME IN MAKING THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN "VIDEO COMPILATION" AND "VIDEO DOCUMENTARY" - After buying 10 volumes in one swoop based on an incomplete description - IT COULDA SAVED ME A LOT OF MONEY!!!!
