Wish I had been there!! October 29, 2003 LtCol Richard L. Jones (USAF-Retired) (Warner Robins, GA USA) 25 out of 25 found this review helpful
I love concert DVDs, anyway, although they often leave me wishing I had been there. This one certainly does that, in spades. It has it all--first--the greatest pickers; second, great video and audio recording quality, and last, an appreciative and knowledgeable audience. Earl Scruggs finger picking the guitar on "Who Will Sing For Me" is not to be missed. Reminds me of those old black and white Flatt and Scruggs TV shows back in the early 60's I used to watch on Sunday night, when Earl would put down his banjo and accompany the group on their "sacred number" as Lester put it. If you want to hear more of him doing that, also buy the Flatt & Scruggs CD "The Complete Mercury Sessions". Great Stuff.
Have to be honest... December 7, 2003 M. Kupper (Seattle, WA) 39 out of 45 found this review helpful
As much as I loved these 2 in their prime, this is a bit lackluster. The playing was slowed down a bit and doc's picking is a bit sloppy these days (he is 82 yrs old). I also don't appreciate the first 3 songs (maybe the best ones on the entire DVD) being interrupted by little biographies. Couldn't you have put those bios somewhere else other than in the MIDDLE of songs (at least put them between songs).

I own alot of concert videos in many genres but this one is possibly the best if you like country and bluegrass picking and story telling. I would highly recommend this DVD to anyone who loves old time country/bluegrass.
The Best! February 19, 2004 Patricia N. Miller (River Falls, WI United States) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
This is the best of the best. True legends of bluegrass. Hearing their stories in their own words is fantastic. A must buy for all those who love the "old-time" music. A real gift to be cherished through the ages. This is Americana at its best.
If You Love Bluegrass, You'll Love this Performance July 31, 2003 Greg Icenhower (Cincinnati, OH, USA) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
This refers to the performance, which I watched on PBS, and not to the DVD -- which I plan to purchase immediately. TIVO found this show for me, and I loved it. It's pure no-frills bluegrass. The artists are treasures of American bluegrass and mountain music: Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Ricky Skaggs. The songs are traditional and the artists are at their best. The performance nicely showcases the artistry of the individuals -- with Earl Scruggs playing guitar as well as banjo, for example, and Ricky Skaggs trading his mandolin for a banjo -- but it's the simple, elegant chemistry among these three that makes the show so spectacular. There's very little bluegrass at all available on DVD so far, and I highly recommend this show as an early start to a bluegrass DVD collection. It is outstanding.
