Those looking for historical details, insights, and heartfelt testimonials from family, friends, music industry royalty, and fellow musicians will be greatly satisfied with Jimi Hendrix: The Uncut Story. One would obviously expect a documentary spanning Hendrix's life and career to include the most important facet of the man: his music and him performing that music live. However, The Uncut Story has none of Hendrix's original music. There are loads of great clips of Hendrix's performances, and lots of photos and stock video footage, but none of them are set to Hendrix's music. This is without a doubt the strangest thing about this documentary. The DVD set is not endorsed or authorized by the James Marshall Foundation or Experience Hendrix, LLC, which is probably the reason the music was not allowed to be used. But even so, skeptics should shelve any prejudices that this documentary is not a high-quality representation of the master himself. The content and attention to detail is exceptional. Another impressive aspect of the documentary is the number of songs that are analyzed by friends and family. Lack of music aside and the puzzling fact that the three-hour program is spread over three discs, it may be safe to say Jimi Hendrix: The Uncut Story is one of the best documentaries on the life of Hendrix that has been made. Fans looking for the story behind the music will be pleasantly surprised. --Rob Bracco

    Description

THIS DVD DOES NOT CONTAIN MUSIC OR PERFORMANCES BY JIMI HENDRIX

With the blessings of Jimi's biological family and many of his closest friends, Passport brings the life of Jimi Hendrix to light as never before. From his upbringing in Seattle to his final days in London, "Jimi Hendrix The Uncut Story" goes beyond all previously released documentaries to explore the complete life-story behind the legendary artist.

Episode 1: 1942-1961 The first part of this three-episode series takes us through Jimi's life in Seattle, Washington where he spent two-thirds of his twenty-seven years. Through the recollection of his closest friends and family, we enter into the inner world of Jimi's childhood upbringing. This is where we come to know the people and events that would shape his love for music and define the extraordinary man he would become.

Episode 2: 1961 - 1967 After Jimi's stint in the army, we join him as a sideman on the Chitlin' Circuit playing behind some of the greatest names in R&B. After following Jimi to New York, we head off to the UK where Jimi Hendrix became the toast of swinging London virtually overnight. Hear directly from the British rock stars and scenesters who witnessed Jimi's musical coup d'etat firsthand. Then follow the Jimi Hendrix Experience on their way to becoming the hottest rock trio on the world stage.

Episode 3: 1967 - 1970 Part three highlights the culmination of Jimi's musical career. It was the peak of the counter-culture era and the world was changing at an incredible pace. Jimi's music and lifestyle were no exception. Here is where we follow Jimi to the height of his creative powers, both in the studio and on the road…only to watch it all come crashing down upon him. Through exclusive interviews, we get the facts behind Jimi's demise and examine the events surrounding his controversial death. But more than that - we come to know the spiritual message behind Jimi's work and celebrate the final stage of his life in music.

35 bucks for a 3 hour documentary! Please. Some good stuff though, esp. when the family talks about the insight to some Hendrix lyrics. I never heard that before. It is unauthorized so of course it doesnt have any Hendrix music. Buy it used, I would have added two stars if they sold it for 20 dollars because it goes into a lot of detail and has some great intervieews and was overall a good production.

1 out of 5 stars Dont bother!   November 19, 2004

Chances are that you're already a fan of Jimi if you're considering buying this. You'll probably already know when he was born, that he moved to England and that he is dead. Somehow or other this DVD manages to stretch that information into 3 hours! Don't be bamboozled by the fact that there are 3 DVD's in this set, each DVD is only 1 hour long? There is no footage of Jimi in concert or anything of interest musically. I don't understand why they didn't just put all the documentary on one DVD and had a second DVD with him in concert with the Experience and the 3rd DVD with the Band of Gypsy's...now that would be worth buying......this just isn't.

I'll probably keep this movie because I'm a Hendrix fan, but I have a few things I'd like to say about it. First off, don't be fooled into thinking that this movie is any kind of Hendrix experience whatsoever. This is the kind of movie you'd tape off television. Don't be fooled by the clever packaging/ laughable price tag. This was designed to make money. Why else would they split up a three hour movie over three DVDs? It did yield a few interesting things though that I hadn't heard before, and it was cool seeing pictures of him growing up, but NO LIVE PERFORMANCES (or ANY Hendrix music at all... in a THREE hour documentary). For the price of this movie, you could buy Hendrix on the Dick Cavett Show, Jimi Plays Berkeley, and Jimi Hendrix (1973), and have SIX hours of absolutely ASTOUNDING footage (including some fantastic interviews) as opposed to three hours of a VH1-style documentary that is grounded mainly in opinion and speculation rather than in fact (now that I read that it sounds pretty harsh, but trust me... stay away. It even smelled bad when I took it out of the box).

I think that you can fit more than 50 minutes on one DVD these days. They trick you into paying $35 by putting this documentary on 3 DVDs like you're getting more.

Wait for it to come out on TV, which wont be long. Try to see it though if you like Hendrix though because it's a very comprehensive look into his life and even though it was obviously low budget, another reason not to pay 35 dollars, it covers a lot with great detail and was very ambitious. Great interviews from family and girlfriends, musicians, producers, and even Jimi's old football coac)and you get a lot of perspective into Hendrix as an artist and as a person. The people that made it were obviously big fans. But its not something you'd see more than once which makes it not worth the price.

I am giving the documentary 3 stars because there is some good interviews and tells the story of Jimi Hendrix with a lot of detail. It was well put together by the film makers. But at the same time I am taking a star away for making a Hendrix documentary without Hendrix music and another star for charging so much for a documentary that is not much longer than a regualar movie. I agree with the other reviews that it is definitely worthwhile for a documentary and as far as documentaries it is one of the better docuemntaries about a musician that I have ever seen, but c'mon a Hendrix documentary without the music.
