Let's face it, Pigs probably isn't the most convincing of titles for a horror film. Pigs generally don't provoke a sense of terror one might expect by, say, a colony of bats or a pack of wild dogs. However, this 1972 "playing at a drive-in near you" film had very little to do with pigs, and in fact was originally released under the more evocative title Daddy's Deadly Darling. Pigs has several things going for it; first and foremost, originality. The story involves young, beautiful but emotionally damaged Lynn Webster (Toni Lawrence) who suffers from extreme bipolar dementia (when the excruciating "la la la" song is queued, audiences know Lynn's entering psychotic territory). Running away from the past, Lynn stumbles upon a secluded roadside diner and charms her way into a job working for the owner Zambrini, (film veteran Marc Lawrence), a true backwoods eccentric with an unusual relationship with his herd of ceaselessly squealing pigs. Zambrini and Lynn become fast friends and unknowingly share a common bond: complete insanity. He feeds unearthed corpses to his bovine pals who go hog wild for human flesh while she kills anyone that reminds her of a terrible past trauma. Things get complicated when neighbors and the law start snooping around. Sure, there are over-the-top performances, unexplained sub-plots, and a barely there budget, but there's also loads of wonderful dark gritty atmosphere and enough plain weirdness to make it all interesting. For those that like plenty of lard in their slop, Pigs serves it up just fine. --Matt Wold

    Description
Lynn loved her daddy very much, but her love could not stop him from raping her and it couldn't keep her from plunging a knife in to his back. Committed to an insane asylum for the criminally insane, Lynn persists in the delusion that her father is not only still alive, but wants her to come home. When Lynn's sensuous nurse indulges in an illicit affair, Lynn steals her uniform and her keys, escaping in the nurses car. The story then shifts to Zambini, an old high-wire circus performer who was seriously injured in a fall. Thought dead, he awakened in the morgue and has been affected by the incident ever since. Zambini owns a rural café among the oil fields and is thought by his old lady neighbor to have murdered his young waitresses and fed their bodies to his pigs. Under the cover of darkness we see Zambini carry a corpse to his barn where, after apologizing to the cadaver, he feeds it to his squealing voracious pigs. The following morning, Lynn arrives and applies for a job in the café. Although Zambini senses she is hiding from someone, he feels sorry for her and gives her a job and a shabby room in which to sleep. What follows is a study in horror as the old man gradually learns Lynn's story and tries to protect her from the law. A terrifying climax is topped by a chilling Hitchcockian twist.

Written, directed and starring Hollywood legend Marc Lawrence (From Dusk Till Dawn, The Big Easy), PIGS is the epic 70's horror film that paved the way for films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Last House on the Left!

    3 out of 5 stars This is a cut-for-TV print   May 31, 2005

Troma released this as a "special edition," but it's a butchered-for-TV print that's missing some of the gore and has some scenes slightly looped. In the old videocassette of this film (which has just about the same picture quality - the DVD's no improvement in that aspect, either) there were many shots of a severed hand that the farmer had to stand on when he was being visited by the cops. In the Troma DVD, you can't even tell what's happening in that scene because they removed all the shots of the severed hand.

"Pigs" isn't a masterpiece (although light years better than any movie that Troma actually produced), but the film and the people who buy it deserve an uncut copy, not the mess that Troma's foisted on us.

I didn't particularly appreciate not being able to skip over the obnoxious "Make Your Own Damn Movie" ad at the beginning of the disc, either. And I'm about sick of Lloyd Kaufman's moronic "introductions" to the movies that Troma releases, too. Just shut up and roll the film, Lloyd... and make it uncut next time.

5 out of 5 stars THIS Little Piggy Should Never Have Left Home...   May 3, 2005

WoW!!! What a suprise. This is a little hidden gem from the early 1970s. A crazy woman escapes from the nut farm and seeks shelter in a pig farm. The problem is she can't stop a killin', the good news is the pigs already eat human flesh. Whala! No trace of the victims. Later explored in "Motel Hell," the farmers SPECIAL recipe is human flesh fed to the pigs, i.e. people eating pigs eating people. The whole thing is repulsive, but the film is tight, scary, and funny at times. The film transfer is dark, and some scenes are hard to see. The feeling of fear and isolation, and the screaming of the pigs is effective.
