Amazon.com Wrigleyville is transformed into Margaritaville as Jimmy Buffett, his band, and many thousands of his dancing, beer-guzzling, Hawaiian shirt-wearing, lei-draped fans invade the venerable Chicago baseball stadium for Live at Wrigley Field Double Header. Held over Labor Day weekend, 2005, the concerts themselves (a daytime show occupies one disc, with a nighttime set on the second) are standard Buffett fare--i.e., another opportunity for the above-named "Parrotheads" to pah-tay--but as the singer-songwriter frequently observes, the venue is something special. Before Buffett arrived, concerts on the sacred ground known as "the friendly confines" were as rare as Cub victories in the World Series (the team's last world championship, in 1908, preceded the opening of Wrigley Field by some six years), and Buffett, a onetime Chicago resident and longtime Cubs fan, is clearly thrilled to be there. Musically, familiar titles like "Cheeseburger in Paradise," Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw," and, of course, "Margaritaville" pretty much sum it up; those looking for depth would be as likely to find it on, say, a Paris Hilton record as here. Simply put, Jimmy Buffett don't play no blues, or lament lost love, or bemoan the state of the world; this is sun-soaked party music, no more and no less, and the folks eat it up. But the band (some 15 musicians, singers, and dancers) is right on it, and several moments during the first set evoke the loose-but-tight, slide guitar-driven feel of one of the great American groups, Little Feat (whose keyboardist, Bill Payne, is sitting in). And while Buffett is no one's idea of a world-class vocalist, his songs almost invariably include catchy choruses that everyone loves to sing along with, and his choice of covers includes Hank Williams' "Hey Good Lookin'," Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl," Crosby, Stills & Nash's "Southern Cross," the Grateful Dead's "Scarlet Begonias," and Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days" (found among the bonus materials). Film montages of Buffett living the good life help break up the visual monotony of a long (165 minutes) concert, and technically the shows look and sound terrific. And don't miss ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro's astonishing rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (also found among the bonus stuff), which may be the highlight of the whole gig. --Sam Graham

Great stuff August 4, 2006 ji0005 (Chicago, IL) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
My box arrived and I tossed the 2nd disc in the player right away. I was lucky enough to have gone to the 1st of his two shows and reliving it was great (the sunday show footage is on the 2nd disc and monday is on the first). The video quality is generally very good and so is the audio quality. It seems like one of the cameras was a little grainy, but in general it is very crisp. I was going to wait to preview it first on netflix, but decided to dive right in. Im glad I did!
And dont worry. Even though Amazon has the wrong cover and only lists it as 1 disc, it is the same thing being sold everywhere else. It is 2 DVD's and says "Live At Wrigley Field" down the right side of the front.
Why Don't We Get Drunk and Buy This Guy a New DVD Player and TV with 5.1 August 9, 2006 Lou (Santa Monica, CA) 13 out of 17 found this review helpful
For the dude who worries about grainy shots, a crew that doesn't test cameras, bad sound and kids in the audience...
The "grainy" shots are super 8 mm. It's an art thing. It's meant to give a home video (from days past home video) Saturday morning at the ball park feel. To capture a piece of that Wrigley history. You're seeing super 8 (park shots, audience), several show cameras and the blimp throughout. This is to give you a comprehensive view of the show. Again, to capture the moment. Not come off super slick. It's Jimmy, this great band, excited fans, a first-time show on hallowed ground and the overall unique experience of the venue with this band. Day time was intended to tie in the game/park history with the music. There were no accidents in the planning. In fact, a huge amount of work is put into each show, especially this show. To be over-produced was not the point.
5.1 and the sound in general. It's possible that you need a new system. It's there and much care was put into the full body as well as little touches of a live show.
Kids. Jimmy got famous for songs about binge-drinking, tattoos, rambling nights of random love, and all manner of debauchery. If mom and dad bring kids to the show, this is their decision. I think JB has actually remarked from the stage that he's surprised to see kids there but everyone is delighted that families come. It's up to people to do as they wish. No one is going to police fan behavior.
You're welcome to your opinion but the short sightededness of this review is amusing.

Long Time Buffett Fan Disappointed August 10, 2006 Terry Paddack 11 out of 15 found this review helpful
Just turning 60 young years a Parrot Head since I lived on St. Thomas in the mid 70's, I'm a long time Buffet fan. I looked forward to the DVD, but I must say this was a disappointment. Can someone explain to me the purpose of the dancing girls? What a distraction. I just loved it when Buffet would walk stage right or stage left and disappear because there was no lighting.
I guess my # one complaint waould be the inclusion of two horrible songs - The City and School Boy Heart are just terrible, with School Boy Heart there just for a self promotion video.
You're playing at Wrigley Field and you don't sing "I'm Growing Older But Not Up" which starts off with the lyrics "I rounded first, never thougt of the worst, as I studied the shortstop position"?
However, I must admit, that the DVD was (almost) worth it to see the Star Spangle Banner in the extras. It was very moving and unbelievable!
Do I recommend it? I'm 50/50, but, push come to shove, even though I'm overall disappointed, I guess I say yes. After all, this is Jimmy Buffet.
But please, Jimmy, go back to the water and the beach. "Live by the Bay" was far superior so please release this on DVD and I'll be first in line.
Almost live Buffett November 12, 2006 Buffett Fan (Olyphant, PA United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was very pleased with this DVD. It was "almost" like being there. As a huge Buffett fan, and after seeing live shows over the past 7 years, I thought the DVD would be a nice "extra" to own. I was a little disappointed in the fact that there were not enough quality shots of the crowd during "Fins" and there could have been more "parking lot" shots. I guess that's just something you have to experience "live". Overall, a great addition to my Buffett collection.
