very disappointed in this CD, You can't beat the Grand Tour but Greatest hits is a big miss!!

Hit and some shoulda-been hits from the 60s. The source tape used is not ideal to say the least, but a very good group of songs, nice soul/R&B production with a touch of Stax and Motown that's not as slick as the later stuff and, of course, Aaron Neville's voice from Heaven. Think of it as an antecedent to the funkier brew of The Neville Brothers. The collection starts off with the classic Tell it Like It Is, the 1967 hit that garnered poor Aaron a big zippo in royalties. Over You is a fun, Sam Cooke-like number. Why Worry jumps along with a classic 60s backbeat. Aaron's voice is really showcased on the Bacharachian, yet R&B roots She Took You for a Ride which also features a tasty, but spare horn chart. You Think You're So Smart is an affected ballad that might remind you of something Simply Red might have done years later, but with better production. Aaron really knows how to phrase those extended notes. Jailhouse is a blues/Otis Redding sounding number with a pleading delivery by Aaron. Love, Love, Love is forgettable except for Aaron's voice and competent musicianship. The source tape used for re-mastering seems more than a bit stretched affecting the sound on Since Your Gone. It's a shame, because it's a nice ballad. Overall: A+ for Aaron's vocals, A for production, and an A- for the compositions. My only beef is with the sound/engineering on the re-master.
