The come-from-nowhere success of Shania Twain's previous album, The Woman in Me, proved that the world was ready for a combination of traditional instruments, girl-power themes, and dance-pop dynamics. Whether Twain is a modern-day Dolly Parton or a country music Spice Girl is a matter of perspective. But with her third album, she accentuates the sing-along choruses and simple dance rhythms while downplaying the country elements. As a pop move, it works wonderfully for her, earning Twain a valued spot on MTV, VH-1, and pop radio. The emphasis is on fun rather than depth, of course. But no one can accuse her of being stingy: she and her Svengali-like producer/husband, slick-rock king Robert "Mutt" Lange (Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, AC/DC), load down the album with 16 songs, all of them quite radio-friendly. --Michael McCall

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, top notch production, songs and singing!   May 16, 1999

I've never been a huge fan of country music. But I remember the first time i heard "you're still the one" i went crazy. The song is completely moving. A couple weeks went by and i was flipping thru the T.V. and heard "That don't impress me much". I told my wife, hey now there are 2 different singers (country) that I like. When the video ended it said it was Shania Twain. I was absolutely floored. A couple weeks later I was listening to a pop station and heard "from this moment". I didn't know who did it, when I found out it was Shania I finally decided to go get the CD. This album is full of great rock, country and pop.

Shania has a very tasteful voice and Mutt Lange is one over the top producer. If you like variety in your music you gotta pick this up. She pulls of a Bonnie Raitt style tune with "If you wanna touch her ask" and you can hear a Blondie influence on "When". She pulls out some great southern rock meets bryan adams on "Whatever you do! don't!".

The vocal melodies on this album are the best i've heard in a long time. Shania can take a pop tune "From this moment" and pull off a Mariah with ease and quite a bit more style.

If you buy one CD this year, make it this one! there isn't a bad song on this album.

4 out of 5 stars Cheerful Pop Girl Power.   January 13, 2007

This is both a good & different album than any other Country based music I've heard. Probably because it really isn't Country? After several listenings, I came to the conclusion that this was 70% Pop, 20% Country, & 10% Disco. I'll leave that debate to those more familiar with those genre's. This was a very lively, even optimistic group of songs. Shania's voice was better with the faster songs.

These are the ones I thought were done the best. "When," the only cynical tune on a cheerful album. It is a "yea right," tune that felt like it did not belong. Perhaps, thats why it stuck out? "From This Moment," certainly a smooth love ballad if there ever was one. Shania sang this from the heart, & it came through exquisitely. "Man I Feel Like A Woman," a feel good girl song with drums, electric guitar, & some mild fiddles. "Love Gets Me Everytime," more of a traditional love song with single girl meeting a guy & falling in love, with a fast tempo. "Come On Over," strong Accordion with one friend comforting another. "Your Still The One," probably her biggest hit? A smoothly done slow tempo tune about a couple who proved the naysayers wrong by staying together.

4 out of 5 stars Not very country, but good provocative pop   June 28, 2002

I like country and I like the real country, Dolly, Loretta, Tammy, etc. But I like good adult contemporary music too. This is just to let you know where I'm coming from. Country purists won't care for this. But those who don't mind crossover which leans much more to a rather seductive pop sound than traditional country will go for it.

For my money, "From This Moment On" is one of the most beautiful love songs ever. It has a delicacy, and yet a powerful emotional build-up. Then there's the upbeat "Man,I Feel Like a Woman!" Nothing subtle here! "You're Still The One" has the beat, the energy, but not the annoying loudness that a certain other pop/country singer overdoes. "That Don't Impress Me Much" is a bit more country than some of these that have received a lot of radio play. And "Rock This Country" speaks for itself.

If you like Shania, you should really like this CD. If you don't, well, that's the way it goes.

Anyone out there who read those negetive reviews about this CD, DO NOT listen. This is a great CD, Shania Twain is awesome, and her music is the coolest. BUY THIS CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Just A Fun Album   November 20, 1999

This is the best album of the 90's by a female artist period. They may not be slow Celion Dion type stuff as this album rocks! Nobody has the talent like Shania. Every song is good enough to become a single. Her husband "Mutt" Lange has the talent to produce and co write every song on this album to make it as big as it has become, selling 14 million albums! I think that is a record for him as he has produced The Cars and Def Leppard, all being popular groups, thanks to his excellent producing. The two together are dynamic. Buy this album as every song is a winner. 14 Million people can't be wrong.
