    5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put the CD away.   December 23, 1999

As I do with most new CDs I purchase, I placed this one in my car CD player and figured I'd give it 2 or 3 times through. But this collection of songs is different. It was like a book that I could not put down, I just kept listening again and again. I have been an Elton John fan for 25 years and have listened to every album/CD. This ranks right up there with the best. His voice has such a rich quality to it, he just seems to get better with age. Listen to this CD one or two times through, and you'll be hooked.

    5 out of 5 stars Elton's masterpiece   April 23, 2006

This is the one that does it for me. It's Elton's masterpiece. I know I know, how can I say that...how can I say anything except "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is his masterpiece. After all wasn't it GBYR that saved the planet from a nuclear disaster in the 70's? Didn't that album bring down the wall in Russia? Help inspire yogurt to be packaged in convinient portable tubes? Yes Elton fans, GBYR is a great album so don't get your [...] in a bunch. It's just that "The Big Picture" is so much better.

It's a return to storytelling for Elton and Bernie and while their best work together has always been storytelling, "The Big Picture" is beyond anything they've done before.

It's a love story really. A story for the ages. A story of fame and excess, redemmption and glory. A story of love, life and loss. I don't expect it to be for everyone, because let's face it, there are some very shallow people among us. For those of you with any passion take a listen. I really don't like to review individual songs, because opinions can vary greatly and what I like and don't like shouldn't keep someone from buying this album. But in this case I have to say that "Live Like Horse's" and "I Can't Steer My Heart Clear Of You" are two of the greatest songs ever written. Ever.

Listen for yourself. If you don't like this album then you just don't have any depth to your soul. May I suggest a white suit, a disco ball and reruns of the Brady Bunch. Have a Nice Day.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album.   April 22, 1999

Elton John is my favorite singer of all-time and I love all his albums. The Big Picture is no exception. I listened to all the songs on this and I loved each and every one. If I had to pick my favorite song, it would have to be "Live Like Horses" which contains brilliant lyrics and a beautiful string arrangement. Other standouts include "Love's Got A Lot To Answer For", "I Can't Steer My Heart Clear Of You", and "Recover Your Soul". If you're a fan of Elton John then you should definitely get this one.

3 out of 5 stars The Big Sleeper   July 5, 2007

Oddly enough, "The Big Picture" was Elton's last top ten album of new material. The historical reason was, in 1997, Elton's remade "Candle In The Wind" tribute to the recently deceased Princess Diana was released the same day, and many record shops (including the one I purchased "The Big Picture") bundled them together. "Candle In The Wind (Goodbye English Rose)" went to number one and stayed there for months, and "The Big Picture" peaked at number 9.

As an Elton John fan of many years, that is kind of saddening. This was Elton at his most Adult Contemporary predictable. The album only once moves above mid-tempo on the dull "Wicked Dreams," and maybe on "If The River can Bend." Otherwise, this is a ballad heavy experience. The arrangements aren't that varied and the songs start to mesh together in a non-exciting way. Only "The End Will Come" stands out, production-wise.

Even more frustrating is, if you take some of the songs apart from the album and they could have been standouts. "Live Like Horses," "If The River Can Bend" and the title track might have had a better chance to shine if they weren't buried in all this pudding. Maybe it was the fact that his close friend Gianni Versace had been murdered that made this album such a down tempo affair, but this is not an Elton Album that has held up over time.

It took him another three years, but Elton regained his groove on "Songs from the West Coast." If you're looking for proof that Elton has what it takes in the present day, listen there or "The Captain and the Kid." (And avoid "Peachtree Road," which is almost as dull as this.)

5 out of 5 stars Picture This!   December 10, 2003

Picture this! In the title track on this album,Elton John tells about a potential career in Hollywood(Do I have a shot at the big part?). Hits from this album are SOMETHING ABOUT THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT(the first when this album was released in September 1997) and RECOVER YOUR SOUL. This album was finished before Elton's close friend Princess Diana of Wales was killed in a car crash nearly a month before this album was released. Also just before this release and immediately after Diana's death,Elton recorded and released CANDLE IN THE WIND '97 as a single with the same music as the original 1973 version from GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD but with different lyrics. It's also known as "Goodbye,England's Rose". Great album!
