BEST RECORDING OF ONE OF THEATER'S ALL-TIME BEST MUSICALS January 1, 1998 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
No recording of "Camelot" can hold a candle to this one, the Original Broadway(perfectly)Cast w/ Richard Burtom, Julie Andrews & Robert Goulet. This recording utterly captures it's spirit(which is what "Camelot" is all about, anyway) & the exc- ellent plot synopsis(in the CD booklet & on back of the LP) fills in the non-musical gaps of Alan Jay Lerner's most inspired & meaningful work. A must have for anyone who loves good singing, music, theater, etc.-Chip Harmison END
Camelot is great! October 14, 2008 ~Amante (Frederick, MD) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you follow my reviews you will find that I enjoy newer, less classical musicals usually. HOWEVER, Camelot was certainly a fine listen. The songs are enjoyable and give a nice outline of the show, the singers are pleasant, the lyrics are pleasing and clever. While listening to the two recordings of Camelot I own, I decided that the Camelot: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1967 Film) 1967 recording is better than this one. I came to this conclusion because the singers on that album have more personality which makes the show more real for the listener. I am in no way saying this 1960 isn't good, that one is just better. Fav song: "If Ever I Should Leave You"
A Classic!! February 25, 2008 Tom George (Wash. DC) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
One of the best all time cast albums. Camelot was an excellent musical, a classic of the early sixties, but the cast album was even better. They kept in songs on the album that were actually cut from the stage production, Fie On Goodness, and Take Me To The Fair, and with good reason, they actually stopped the show, not enhancing character or plot at all, and added to the shows running time of over 4 hrs. Wisely excised, but thankfully preserved on the album. The performances are now legendery, Richard Burton's only, and magnificent, musical, Julie Andrews sublime as Guenevere, and Robert Goulet's definitive version of If Ever I Would Leave You. The orchestrations are thrilling, the overture causes goose bumps, the rest of the album is on the same level. A must have for any musical theater fan.
Camelot- Original Broadway Cast recording May 19, 2009 Eleanor Wilde (Michigan) Well, as an avid Julie Andrews fan, I can not remain completely unbiased. I love the CD, and the performances are certainly worth the price. This is a real treasure, and every song is done beautifully. I particularly like "If Ever I Would Leave You." Love songs just aren't done that well anymore. Also, every track by JA is exceptional, those songs alone are enough to purchase the CD. I highly reccomend it for anyone who loves Broadway or simply enjoys a good story, because the songs alone tell a wonderful tale.
