SANTANA' S BEST December 5, 2000 ROBERT V. PLAZZOLA (ROSEVILLE, MI United States) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
SANTANAS BEST FOR MY MONEY. A GREAT COMBINATION OF ROCK,JAZZ,AND R&B. NOT A BAD CUT ON ALBUM. EXCELLENT BAND AND VOCALS ESPECIALLY ON BASS. GREAT BASS SOLO ON STAND BACK! THIS ALBUM IS WORTH EVERY CENT. BUY IT AND ENJOY!
Underrated March 1, 2001 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
this cd is terribly underrated.it seemed people were getting tired of santana and quit paying attention to them.its a shame this cd didnt get all the attention it deserves.alex lingertwood has a great soulful voice and it fits perfectly into the music.one of my very favorites is aqua marine.a delightful laid back instramental.i also love the rocker, all i ever wanted.marathon is a truly a gem and should gain the respect it deserves.all in all a superb album.
Lost of energy and wonderful solos November 5, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I remember when "Marathon" came out and the local radio staion started playing "Hard Times". Good solid rocking there, and the band at my high school prom played "Stand Up/Runnin'". I, too, love the instrumental "Aqua Marine". Generally the album flows quite well although it has a more pop feel than other releases which may turn off some listeners.
Best Santana Album Ever January 21, 2000 Doctor Music (Front Royal,Virginia United States) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
This my favorite Santana album. It is much more standard rock without as much percussion as some of the others. Every song is excellent and Carlos really plays a smoking guitar on this one. Aqua Marine is really a masterpiece. Summer Lady and Stay are beautiful lite rock tunes. All I Ever Wanted really kicks. Alan Pasqua plays excellent keyboards throughout the album. Alex Litgerwood's vocals are tremendous.
Probably Santana's worst November 4, 2006 kireviewer (Sunnyvale, Ca United States) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
This album was released in 1979. It is 44 minutes long and there are no liner notes. It was Santana's worst selling album of all time (it did worse than Santana's forays into jazz). There are only 2 tracks on this CD that are any good, and they are both instrumentals. Aqua Marine may be the prettiest composition that Santana has ever done. Runnin' is a short, driving instrumental tacked on to Stand Up. The rest of the CD is soul/pop. I like pop. I like soul. I like Santana playing pop and soul. This CD is just bad pop/soul. Part of the problem is the new lead singer, Alex Ligertwood, who sings all the vocals. He has a bad, in your face, over the top style. He will be a bane for Santana for years to come. After 3 smash Latin-rock albums, Santana migrated to jazz fusion. In the later seventies, he started moving back to his Latin-rock roots. But then he overshot and started doing pop with a Latin tinge. And tried moving into soul. From the late seventies and all through the eighties, Santana had a stripped down pop sound. He started getting it back together in the nineties. However, no matter what he was into, Santana always put on a great concert.
