While it's always bad to judge a cd but it's design cover, let's just go ahead and do it. Here you have a black and white photograph of the band with a black background. Kinda different compared to their debut album with them all in color and with clouds around them. This album is definately black...very hard, raw, and gritty. Very heavy hard rock'n'roll here.

This album was a huge success the year it was released. Today, this album is often sadly pushed away from 'Toys In The Attic' as well as 'Rocks'. While I love both albums with my heart, this is what really started their rock 'n' roll story.

The album starts off with 'Same Old Song And Dance' which has long been a concert favorite. But the magic doesn't quite happen till you next head for 'Lord of the thighs'. A strange yet great song. It sets the dark tone of the album. Next you get 'Spaced' and 'Woman of the World' which are probably the darkest Aerosmith songs i've ever listened to in my life. Next you have a short semi-fast paced 'SOS (too bad)' which helps to give out a little relief from the dark attitude. Finally you head for the Yardbird's cover of 'Train kept a rollin' which is another huge concert favorite among fans and the band. Some great guitar solos in it. Next you come to another sweet and melodic favorite among fans, 'Seasons of Wither'. Although supposed to be a ballad, it seems very much in-line with a dark tone to it. Still very beautiful and beats the hell out of 'I don't want to miss a thing (ugh). And then finally, we end with 'Pandora's Box' which is accompanied by a nice saxophone with an RnB side to it.

Overall, a great album. Probably one of the best done by them. If you're new to Aerosmith, then i suggest listening to Toys In The Attic or Rocks and then appreciating the magic of Get Your Wings which comes to show you how they got big.

I dunno about you, but i certainly got my wings. Go get your own today and soar high with Aerosmith!!!

Among the finest hard rock albums of all time. Aerosmith fans from the post-Run DMC era who have yet to discover what the fuss was all about should look no further. Nothing Aerosmith has done since `Rocks' shakes my tree, but `Rocks,' `Toys,' and especially this monster disc comprise some of the most stirring and potent hard rock in the era where it became the industry standard (you know, pre-disco, pre-punk, pre-new wave).

The production took a quantum leap from their debut LP (`Aerosmith'), and the songs flow effortlessly (catch the amazing brain-fogged transition between `Lord of the Thighs' and `Spaced'). Every song is powerful in its own right, but this is most undeniably an "album," and needs to be heard in its entirety to be fully appreciated (unlike, say, `Toys', which is more of a singles collection).

The Tyler libido was in full flower, long before the `80's and `90's when it became self-parody. `Lord of the Thighs' and `Pandora's Box' are prime (primed!) examples. `Train Kept a Rollin' still stands as the best version (by miles) of this song I've ever heard. This and `S.O.S.' give a curiously "live" feel, while `Spaced' and `Wither' are definitely very studio, very insular tracks (probably best suited for the headphone aficionado - "under the influence," of course).

Aerosmith Absconds with Alice Cooper's Sound (and band)!   May 17, 2004

"Get Your Wings" is actually a good record. That is, if you were a fan of circa-1973 Alice Cooper's sound. Like the NY Dolls, in 1974 Aerosmith tried and failed to get Cooper-protege Bob Ezrin to produce their upcoming album. To get a sense of how much of an influence ACG was, you need to look no further than the lead tracks from both albums ("Mama Kin" & "Personality Crisis"). Both were blatant rewrites of Cooper's "Cross-Town Traffic" inspired SMOKER - "Under My Wheels".

When Ezrin wasn't impressed with either band, he sent his protege Jack Douglas to work on the Aerosmith project. After experiencing problems with the quality of Aerosmith's guitar playing in the studio, Douglas was forced to "ghost" Aerosmith with the same studio band that he (and Ezrin before him) had used on ACG's 1973 Top 10 album "Muscle of Love".

Interestingly, Douglas trashes ACG's playing - while failing to mention that the same musicians were used on "Get Your Wings".
Joe Perry was considered a guitar "god" in the 70's, primarily due to his simulated "live" version of "Train Kept A Rollin". Unfortunately - he wasn't on the track!! Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter of Alice Cooper's studio-band, provided nearly all of the guitar work on GYW(as they later did for Kiss, Pink Floyd's "The Wall", Patti Smith Group, etc.,). Compare the sound of "Same Old Song and Dance" to the earlier Cooper work "Never Been Sold Before". Compare "Hard Hearted Alice" to "Seasons of Wither". The list goes on.

It wasn't until Perry played on Cooper's song "Trash" that the debt was repaid. Somewhat. A Florida music critic (forget the name - but can be googled) recently wrote a great piece that traced Cooper's early influence on Aerosmith.

The idea that Aerosmith, NY Dolls and the Sex Pistols can be in the Rock & Roll HOF before their PRIMARY INFLUENCE (ACG) is more insane than any Alice character. Apart from Roky Erikson - nobody is more deserving.

I'm slowly filling in my collection of Aerosmith. It's mostly the old stuff that I don't have. I've heard a few songs off of this album before on their GREATEST HITS album and the PANDORA'S BOX boxed set. For me, at least from the albums I've heard, this is second only to TOYS IN THE ATTIC. I've been hunting for this CD at a good price for a while because I've wanted the original album with SEASONS OF WITHER. I love that song. Most of the other songs on this album are just as good. SAME OLD SONG AND DANCE, LORD OF THE THIGHS, and PANDORA'S BOX are probably the biggest standouts. I've been listening to Aerosmith for about the last ten years and their old stuff is still the best. This is a must have for any rock collection.
