Buy it for TORI AMOS. November 28, 1999 4 out of 10 found this review helpful
I must admit that I bought the 'Higher Learning' soundtrack specifically for the two previously unreleased Tori Amos tracks, because I am a *huge* fan of Tori's. Her cover of "Losing My Religion" is majestically haunting, wistful and entrancing. Her self-penned song, "Butterfly," is eerily beautiful, with its typical Tori chorus of: "and is it right, butterfly, they like you better framed and dried?" After listening to these two jewels, I gave the rest of the CD a try. "Don't Have Time" by Liz Phair was angrily upbeat and quite likable. I cannot say the same for the other tracks. Personally I find rap music to be abominable, unintelligent, and nauseating. The tracks from Ice Cube, Mista Grimm, and Rage Against the Machine (face it -- they're rap with guitars), to name a few, did nothing for me. The R&B tracks, like Me'Shell NdegoCello's and Raphael Saadiq are just not my type of music. If rap or R&B is your forte, you would love this album -- go buy it immediately. Everyone else should buy it for the Tori tracks. I am giving this album 3 stars because the Tori Amos tracks (and Liz Phair track) were astounding. And although I did not like the rest of the album, it was not because the music was terrible -- it's just not my type of music. Check it out for yourselves!
Ahead Of Its Time May 5, 2002 4 out of 12 found this review helpful
The movie Higher Learning touched on one of the realest issues in the world today: the fight for racial equality. This proved good in the movie, but it didn't have the same effect on the album. Despite its good intentions, this soundtrack was way ahead of its time.Back in 1995 (the year this came out) you'll notice there were no Totally Hits or Now That's What I Call Music collections. In other words, it seemed unheard of for artists of all different genres to be on the same album. There ARE appearances from very good artists, but except for Raphael Saadiq's offering (remember the definite jam "Ask Of You"?), their songs are average at best. Also, multiple appearances by people like Ice Cube and Tori Amos make you wonder exactly whose album this is. Now that this album is several years old, people can observe that maybe the artists here were just trendy. I know nobody actually counted on dropping out of sight, but seriously, when's the last time you heard from Mista Grimm, Eve's Plum, Zhané or The Brand New Heavies? I can't say it was a bad idea to make an album like this, because it wasn't. The trouble was that it just went every which way but up.
