5 out of 5 stars Feel The Funk   March 27, 2000

If you're a present day Incubus fan, (Make Yourself, S.C.I.E.N.C.E.) you might not be used to this, because it has so much funk and comedy in it. But if you've listened to Fungus Amongus, then you can tell that this is a latter-day Fungus Amongus. The first song, "You Will Be A Hot Dancer," is a really good piece of music, once you listen for a while. "Shaft!" is the best song on the CD, because it sounds the closest to any other Incubus songs. The chorus is amazing, too. "Take Me To Your Leader" is kind of weird, but I do like the orgy references (the sex action, not the band). "Version" is an awesome song, the lyrics are good, there are reggae-tinged guitars, the drums go perfectly and there are some fine scratches by Mr. DJ Lyfe. It is actually a little better than "Shaft!". "Azwethinkweiz" is a jazzy kind of song, think "Anti-Gravity Love Song" or "Battlestar." "Hilikus" is also a great song, because it has an Incubus feel to it. It is like a classic song by them, and once again there are some nice scratches be Mr. Lyfe. If you like this, try these bands: Early Primus, Snot, and Faith no More.

5 out of 5 stars Short but Good   July 15, 2003

First of all, this is not the first recording that Incubus put out. Their first CD that I am aware of was Fungus Amongus. However this was their major label debut and it bridges the gap between Fungus and S.C.I.E.N.C.E.

I found Incubus through Make Yourself and then through Morning View. I liked them so well and they where on heavy rotation in my collection that I decided to start looking earlier in their career. I have to say that picking up their older stuff has been very rewarding.

This is a blend of many different styles of music such as Funk, Rock, and maybe a little Jazz in there too. Sure this CD is short, but there is no filler. If many of bands around right now could put out a CD that's this good beginning to end then there may not be such a fuss over file-sharing. This album is worth every penny just like every other Incubus CD I have picked up so far. This is a fun album to listen to and belongs in the music collection of any fan of Incubus.

    4 out of 5 stars A Good Find   March 4, 2001

I was very reluctant at first to buy this EP, because I already heard Fungus Amongus. I heard FA wasn't remastered, but when compared to this EP, it certainly sounds it. I thought the other four tracks (Shaft, etc.) would be just copies of FA, but they weren't-they sound so rough and old, and in some ways a little better. (although adjusting to "Take me to Your Leader" takes a while) So, if you already own FA, this is a good buy, because technically, all the songs are new in their own way. Another noticable thing, is that this EP far more uses DJ Lyfe than probably any other Incubus album. So, if "Batllestar" wasn't your cup of tea, I wouldnt recommend it. But anyway, this EP is a great, uh, EP, and a must-buy due to its awesome price as well. Here's a track by track review: 1. You Will Be a Hot Dancer-When I first popped this in my CD player, it was a shock because it sounds SO different from FA. But, after the newness wore off, I can say that it still sounds good. 2. Shaft-Out of all the FA songs, this one probably sounds the best, however, most fanss will notice the little things: in the middle, Brandon doesn't say "shaft.....shut the f** up" like in FA, and the guitars sound a little, I guess you could say hollow. 3. Take Me To Your Leader-This was my fave song on FA, but here it sounds totally different. Like, in the beginning, the little noises aren't as noticeable. And the guitars that used to crunch so smoothly (also in the beginning) sound a little different. And when Brandon's unique vocal style used on FA was put to good use, it sounds bad here. It just doesn't sound as good, and if you listen closely, it sounds like an echo, 4. Version-This is one of the reasons I bought it, (because you can't find it anythwere else) and it is a disappointment. The song seems to drag on too long, and the chorus/verse exchange isn't smooth. 5. Aswethinkweiz-Pretty good song, safe to say best on here. It's so funky and funny-how could this and say, "I Miss You" (Make Yourself) be the same band? 6. Hilikus-The more I think about it, this is the best FA song on here, because it sounds the closest. What else can I say, it's an all around solid track. All in all, this EP is sort of a mixed bag. The Incubus guys apologized for the "roughness" of FA, but this sounds way worse, especially noticeable on track 3. The skit about "fat a** Santa" is funny, and there's a hidden track at the end, which is ok. It's not the best Incubus album out there, but I HAVE to recommend it because tracks 4 and 5 aren't anywhere else, and if you're fairly open-minded, you might enjoy the other, slightly rougher, FA cuts.

5 out of 5 stars One Hot Marmaduke   December 25, 2000

The Incubus boys go back into the studio and re-record a few of the older funky tracks of Fungus (Hot Dancer, Shaft, Take Me To Your Leader, Hilkus), and add a few new ones. This EP is one little gem, everything you've come to love about Incubus remains in this EP. From the beginning track, "You Will Be A Hot Dancer", you know this is some funky stuff. There is a lot of humor present in the album, with a rather lighthearted feel, even though some of the harder riffs, ala Shaft, kick in. If you are a hardcore fan, you most likely already have this album, however, to new Incubus fans, I reccommend this , as long as your musical tastes are fairly open. The 6 songs on this CD are great to listen to over and over, and its fun to pop it in and play "Azwethinkweiz" for a friend. The songs on the album are definitely a bit more amateur than their more recent albums, however, I still HIGHLY recommend this CD. You can snag this CD for a good price too. Get it, you won't regret it.
