A chunk of raw Rock, before he hit the big time with Saturday Night Live, HBO, and everything else. This CD was recorded at a 1991 gig in Atlanta, and while it lacks the polish and daring of his later hit Roll with the New, it has plenty of laughs to satisfy his fans. Born Suspect has some nice Rock riffs on his life back then: "Minimum wage means that we would pay you less if we could, but it's against the law!" and "Don't you hate it when your boss asks you 'How ya doin'?' You know exactly how I'm doin'--bad!" Plus, he makes fine fun of Washington, D.C., mayor Marion Barry: "Now you can't tell your kids, 'Don't smoke crack, or else you won't be nothin'.... 'Well, I could be mayor." Though on Born Suspect Rock is unpolished, a little self-indulgent, and not as razor-sharp as he later became, the disc is nevertheless worth a listen, if only to get a glimpse of this great talent. --Michael Gerber

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!   August 11, 2000

This cd was chris rocks early material, it's a little raw and unorginized compared to his later work (biger and blacker), but still hilarious. Before you get this you might want to get chris rocks other stuff like roll with the new, but I did and I heard this and it is great. Chris Rock is one of the few african american comedians whose material is funny to all, a rich white buisness man will laugh at the same joke that the black guy at the gas station will laugh at. He is easily the best comedian of our generation, if not all time.

4 out of 5 stars Funny If A Little Bit Crude   February 13, 2005

Born Suspect is a hillarious comedy gig featuring Chris Rock at an Atlanta Night Club. Many of Chris' subject matter has aracey tone to it so if you don't like crude humor you may have some issues with this performance. Nonetheless, there are many funny routines ranging from the weaves to McDonalds to the Crack Mayor Barry and much more.

Even the two rap tracks are pretty amusing and cool. Chris uses some foul language here and there but it does not approach Eddie Murphy's extreme X rated level. Chris uses his voice to emphasize different points particuarly with the Crack Mayor track.

Overall this CD will appeal to most audiences black, white, or other ethnicity. Try to overlook the crude moments as there is some good humor here.

3 out of 5 stars Chris Rocks The Spot (3.5 Stars)   June 25, 2004

Chris Rock is hilarious. There's no other way to say it. On this 1991 release, recorded in an Atlanta night club, Chris Rock tackled all kinds of topics that left me holding my sides when it was all over. Though this isn't his funniest album, it's definitely not his worst. There are times where Chris does manage to fall flat. Tracks like "The Rib Man" and "Weaves / Color Contacts" could have been left off the album. And there are times where the volume goes up and down due to technical errors. But those are minor problems. Overall, the album is hilarious. If you haven't heard this album, give it a try. You'll love it.

2 out of 5 stars Not up to his usual level   April 1, 2001

This CD was a disappointment in many ways. First, the material was just not as funny as his later stuff. Aside from his material about Marion Barry, the jokes were sustandard. Secondly, the mixing on this album was terrible and I had to turn the volume way up on my stereo so I could make out what exactly Rock was saying. Rock was also mumbling a lot, which made it even harder to understand him. He seemed to lack the confidence that he displays on his later albums. If you are a die-hard Chris Rock fan, the get this. Otherwise, just stick to his later stuff.
