I have never heard this CD, but the album title just makes me want to buy it. You should too.
Oh, how the Big Boss has fallen... February 20, 1999 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Mix-A-Lot, we hardly knew ye. "Return of the Bumpasaurus" has some great sounds, yes, but his style is moving away from the old school sound that made his other albums so much fun. The reason I like Mix above all other rappers, that being his sense of humor, refusal to take himself too seriously, and great voice -- with one or two exceptions it's all gone here. He lets his little friends have too much time in front of the mike; in fact, despite the "Sir Mix-A-Lot" name on the front, we don't hear as much of him as we deserve. His hangers on have no talent, and his back beats are starting to take that washed-out quasi-gangsta sound. Do yourself a favor -- get the "Jump on It" single and listen to "Mack Daddy" again.
Bumbalicious Baby, Oh Yeah April 22, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This album is an amazing accomplishment for Sir Mix-a-lot. It offers some really great beats and as always Mix's raps are at the top of their game. The CD, which features the club song "Jump on it", was released two years after my favorite Mix-a-lot Cd, "Chief Boot Knocka". Although it does not one-up Chief, it does manage to get your head bouncing. In songs such as "Da Bomb" and "Mob Style" Mix lets loose with a barage of sounds. He lets his lyrical flow rock you with songs like "Aintsta" and "Aunt Thomasina". The pure party song "Jump on it" is a nice addition and will definately get all the freaks in the room up on dance floor. This is a great CD and would be a nice addition to any music collection. It is not Sir Mix-a-lot's best, but is still a great rap CD nonetheless.
Mix-a-lot at his best January 29, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This hard hitting album found its way to the top of my personal charts. He raps about things we can all relate to. He is one of the last story telling old school style rappers. If you like old school you will love this album.
Very disappointing for Sir Mix-A-Lot February 2, 2001 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This album wouldn't be too bad if it were from some unknown rap act who never cut another album, but what is really disappointing is that this piece of mediocrity came from Sir Mix-A-Lot, who is one of my favorite rappers. There are a few OK, danceable songs, like "Sag" and "Bark Like You Want It," but even they fall far short of the standard Mix set on his previous two albums. There are a bunch of annoying, unfunny skits in between the songs, which I didn't even find amusing on the first listen. The sound isn't nearly as good as on "Mack Daddy" or "Chief Boot Knocka" (my favorite Mix album). On the song "Return of the Bumpasaurus" Mix-A-Lot actually hints that he changed his style consciously because he's falling from popularity. However, the new style of the beats and music he raps to. . .isn't Mix's style at all! He pirates what sounds like P-Funk style, but horribly. If I wanted P-Funk, I'd buy a P-Funk album, but I bought a Mix album because I wanted his style of rapping and music. The music doesn't sound too bad if you aren't already a fan of Mix-A-Lot or P-Funk, but I'm a fan of both and know that this album is inferior to either. If Mix-A-Lot puts out another album, I hope he goes back to the style which works for him, rather than selling out and changing his style and trying to be someone else.I could go on forever complaining about how much Mix has fallen off his previous albums, but instead let me recommend: buy "Mack Daddy" and "Chief Boot Knocka," and stay away from "Bumpasaurus" unless you just have a really morbid sort of curiosity.
