| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com essential recording With the help of producer Tony Brown, George Strait redefined his relationship to the contemporary country mainstream with this 1992 soundtrack album, which became the bestselling single release of his career. In the movie, Strait portrays a country star who walks away from the smoke and mirrors to get back to his down-home roots. The ballad "When Did You Stop Loving Me" is as pure country as it gets in this day and age, while "The King of Broken Hearts" and "Where the Sidewalk Ends" introduced Strait's audience to an exceptionally gifted songwriter named Jim Lauderdale. --Rick Mitchell

This one is pure country December 20, 1999 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
The Pure Country soundtrack is the album that really made me a George Strait fan. I had liked George Strait before I saw him in the movie and bought the tape of the soundtrack album, but I have to say that after listening to the album, I got "hooked" on George. The ballad "I Cross My Heart" is my favorite song from this album, but "Heartland" and "Where The Sidewalk Ends", uptempo songs with some awesome lead guitar and fiddle parts, are also excellent songs. Furthermore, "When Did You Stop Loving Me" is a classic George Strait country song. These are just the highlights of an altogether excellent album. I think that in making the movie and the accompanying soundtrack album, George was telling us that there is still room for some "pure country" (quoting the movie's title) in the midst of all the "fluff" that I believe passes for country music nowadays. This one is definitely five stars, in my opinion.

Give This One A Listen April 24, 2002 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
My first introduction to the music on the album was through the movie, I enjoyed both the movie and the music. Of course I had heard of George Strait (who hasn't) but I was not really up to date on his music. I knew that he had a number of really big hits and the traditionalists liked him. That was what I considered the extent of my exposure to him. After the movie, when I purchased this soundtrack I realized what an excellent singer he was. His style of music hit home with me. I enjoy every song on this album. Each one stands alone as a very good song and they fit into the overall feel of the album to make a very good album. This album (showing my age) will go down as a classic. To take this a step further, the album interested me enough to buy more music by this artist and I thought, why not go big? I bought the box set and was stunned to hear so many songs that I knew and had sung over the years that were actually George Strait and I never knew it. This is a big statement but with the vast amount of material that George has released I feel that this is his best. Although it may be because the movie holds a sentimental piece of my heart, it is also surely because the music stands on its own. If you are a country fan, you owe it to yourself to purchase this album. If you are a music fan, give it a try, you won't be let down.
This is the greatest recording in the history of sound!!!! March 11, 1999 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
George has done it again! Listen, watch the movie and then buy this album. You won't regret it. Once you've seen the movie, when you hear each song, you automatically think of a part of the movie and the movie is great. The songs are good n' country. I love this album. America is blessed to have George Strait and his wonderful music.
