Less Than Jake kick booty! October 31, 1999 24 out of 25 found this review helpful
I bought this CD when it was released in 1996 for 7 bucks on sale. And it was the best 7 bucks I ever spent! Punk prices for their merchandise is important to LTJ. They are not a "political" band, but ya gotta have fun sometimes...I listened to this CD for a year and a half straight, almost every day, and never got tired of it. My toes never stopped tapping and I always sing along with every single song. Their live shows are incredible -great energy, everyone jumping up and down and shouting the lyrics with Chris and Roger. If you think their CDs are good, you have to see them live! Horns add great hooks to every song. Vinnie's drumming keeps the toes a tappin'. The best ska/punk band around, hands down! Best songs are: 9th At Pine, Happyman, Automatic, Sugar In Your Gas Tank, Shindo, Jen, Frank, and Lockdown. Every song on this CD is good - tons of energy. And it grows on you with every listen. I gave all my friends a copy of this tape as presents. That's how good it is. LTJ is like fine wine- should be shared and savored.
But its just like every other Less Than Jake CD... March 28, 2001 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
Yes...just like every other LTJ CD...Totally awesome. Less Than Jake's Losing Streak, like all other LTJ albums, definitely holds a slot as contender for one of the best records of all time in my book. Less Than Jake created a whole new genre of music themselves with their "punk with horns" sound and scratchy yet rhythmic vocals. You cannot listen to this cd without moving, it is impossible. The talent and catchy chorus's these guys have is nothing short of marvelous and it doesn't let up. Sure it has its slow, ska moments in songs like "9th At Pine", "Krazy Glue", "Never Going Back To New Jersey" and a melodic vox and bass intro in "Shindo" but when you get to the unbelievable chorus' of songs like "107", "Johnny Quest Thinks We're Sellouts", "Automatic", and many of the other tracks on this record you cant help but feel the talent this band has. And the lyrics, don't get me started on those. I know people that at the last minute chose not to kill themselves because of songs on this cd. This record, Losing Streak, started a whole new era of punk rock and is one that you cannot pass up.
Loserboy's Funkalishis Review June 15, 2001 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
At the time when I didn't even know what ska music was, my friend purchesed this CD. He let me listen to it a few times, and soon I became hooked on it. Right away I went out and got this CD, and ever since I've been a ska fanatic, thanx to the amazing sound of Less Than Jake!!!!!This CD is full of fast pased, energetic songs that will have you hooked from the first song. My top personal favorites are: (1) Johny Quest Thinks We're Sellouts (2) Ask The Magic 8 Ball (3) How's My Driving Doug Hastings? (4) Shindo (5) 9th At Pine If your a big ska fan, or like LTJ, then you'll love this album. This is definetly LTJ's best CD, and the most energetic. So if your thinking,"Should I buy this CD,".....well the answer would be.......YES GO OUT AND BUY IT!!!!!!! *Also check out Reel Big Fish*
If you like your horns.... October 7, 1999 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Less Than Jake are always a band to count on when making records is at hand. This album has it all from furios punk 'Just Like Frank' to the catchy numbers like '9th at Pine' and 'Shindo' but the best is left till last with the triumphant ' Rock And Roll Pizzeria'..and for those who are longtime fans they have re recorded 'Johnny Quest....' and 'Jen dont like me anymore'.A barnstorming classic!!!
Skankadelic! April 17, 2002 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Less Than Jake are the greatest ska-punk band alive! This 16-song masterpiece is THE ska album to have, and also manages to snag the SoCal punk sound perfectly. And they're from Florida! The rhythm section and horn section interplay very tightly and pull the sound together very nicely. The album's production isn't shoddy, but also not too slick. The best songs are "Automatic," "Happyman," "9th And Pine," "Sugar In Your GasTank," "Shindo," "107," "Johnny Quest," "Never Going Back To New Jersey," "Ask The Magic 8-Ball," "Dopeman," and "Lockdown." That's 3/4 of the CD! My favorite song probably is a tie between "Sugar..." and "Johnny Quest." Both songs are just fast-paced, fun tracks with enough horn blasts and segues to last a ska fan forever. Losing Streak is a great release. It's sad how talentless bums like No Doubt sell 10 million copies of Tragic Kingdom while this opus hasn't gone gold yet. Ah well. By way, a note of caution: This album has my current record for most cussing without a parental advisory, so beware! Check out the Bosstones and other LTJ CD's for more great ska, skapunk, and skacore.
