| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Phair claimed that this album was a song-by-song answer to the Rolling Stones' Exile On Main St. While that's unlikely, it's an astonishing songwriting debut. Guyville got a lot of attention for its very frank sexuality, and though Phair knows how to shock, her real strength is lyrics that capture subtleties of extreme emotional states and interpersonal bargaining. Her voice isn't great, but all it has to do is ride the rails of her acutely observed, ingeniously melodic songs: "Divorce Song"'s laser-beam analysis of the moment when a marriage disintegrates, "Flower"'s coy lust, "Stratford-On-Guy"'s dizzying epiphany. She's also an inventive guitarist, and her arrangements--featuring coproducer Brad Wood--keep the album fresh and varied. --Douglas Wolk

Liz Phair's debut album, "Exile in Guyville" is a step forward, a huge step, for women in music. Liz does what, for some reason, other women in music were unable to do--she cries out in this album from a place called "Guyville" where men in music have reigned supreme. A direct response to the 18 songs on the Rolling Stones' "Exile on Main Street," Liz Phair throws a few punches at the world of music, using explicit lyrics like terms of endearment, answering the question of "what are all of those good girls thinking on the inside?" Buy this cd for its insights on life, buy it for its importance in music today, buy it for its dry, honest lyrics, buy it for its unusual sound, for any of these reasons, just buy it. It's one of those albums all music collectors should recognize, respect, and own.
The best CD I've ever listened to! August 31, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Liz Phair's vocals might not be stellar but her lyrics are truly awesome. Her songs are deeply personal and are filled with emotion. The guitar work is great too. I would say Liz is one of the top songwriters of the decade. This CD rocks!!!
Wow is the only way to sum this one up! June 27, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First off, I am a guy so right there I shouldnt have liked the album due to its anti-male scheme on some tracks, but I found myself relating and liking it more and more as I listened to it. The songs are all equally good so I cant say which ones I like best....lets just say my faves are the first and last as well as all the ones in between. Defininately worth purchasing this gem of heart-felt lyrics. Buy it!
Talk dirty to me! June 11, 1998 DreadPirate@merlins-cave.com (Philly, PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ok, I'm in another one of my moody, depressive, I hate the world moods. You know what I mean. And there's only one thing that can help. Put a little Liz Phair on. You know the one...Exile on Guy Street. And then it comes...Whap! A slap in the face. Tell it like it is, Liz. Belt it out. Don't hold anything back. Don't break on the words, don't give in on that melody. Ok, not the greatest voice. But Dylan couldn't sing either. But she can convey her emotions through her voice better than anybody. Just a woman with a guitar and a notepad. And man what a notepad. Honest. Real. Revenge! Man, the guy who jilted Liz Phair will never be able to date another woman again. Brutal. Just brutal. Who did this to the poor girl? And was it worth it if we got this album out of it? I don't know what she's better at, playing acoustic or the electic guitar. "Oh, what ever happened to a boyfriend? The kinda guy who tries to win you over?" I wouldn't want to tangle with Liz at a party. Five feet two inches of pure fury, fire and passion. Pity the man who tries to get into her head. There isn't any need to make this sound studio produced or polished. Just give the woman a microphone. Take each song in, one at a time. Absorb each song in its entirety before moving on to the next. Think of the album as an 18-step program to breakup recovery. Dwell. Then get over it. "Letters and sodas" indeed. This is an amazing album. Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya...PUNK?
A minor follow up..... December 2, 1999 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Okay, so I came back to see how people have been reviewing Liz..I myself am still obsessive about this brilliant and completely incredible album after much time...but I feel sad for the people who've reviewed but can't appreciate this work. So maybe I am a white chick from the suburbs and maybe I love Liz and her music perhaps more than others but COME ON people show a little respect. I'd like to see you come down here and try it. LIZ IS AMAZING! If you haven't bought this...DO IT! YOU'LL ADORE IT. I did. Give it a chance, it'll become a part of you. Okay just had to throw in my two cents. Again. Sorry. :)
