A candle still burning brightly. April 4, 2001 Scott Kirby (Chatsworth, CA USA) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
There are many good songs on all of Stan Rogers' albums. There are many good albums, the best being "Fogerty's Cove," "Between the Breaks," "From Fresh Water," and most importantly, this one. Just give a listen to the "Song of the Candle" and you will hear what I mean. I don't care how many times I have heard this song, it always gives me gooseflesh and a lump in my throat. God, could this guy sing. And write! Don't deprive yourself of a truly fine album of songs by a master. Other highlights include the old Archie Fisher tune "Oh No, Not I," "Bluenose," and the title tune. I treasure the day I was first introduced to Stan Rogers and this is a prime reason.
How do you describe Stan Rogers? October 26, 2004 Bt (Parts unknown) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I remember doing a couple of radio shows, and I would play Stan, and his brother Garnet's music all the time. Funny, but I would get calls from the other dj's asking me who this guy was. The funny part is that the people calling were from all walks of life. One guy was a country dj, another had a heavy metal show, another did a spoken word show, and this one dude was all politics and ecclectic music. It didn't matter if they hated folk music, they loved Stan Rogers. It didn't matter if they hated East Coast music, they loved Stan Rogers. This says it all about this man's music, and vision. It transcends everything and hits you square between eyes. You can't describe it, you have to hear it, then you'll feel it, and you won't forget it. Timeless, powerful, and unique, there is only a handful of musicians with this gift. Don't miss out.
This recording is very mood -provoking, vintage Stan Rogers September 25, 1998 kserickson@netscape.net (Salt Lake City) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
This was my first recording by Stan Roger, after being introduced to him on the CBC. The classic songs like the "Bluenose" and the "Jeannie C" reach out and touch my soul. Some of the songs on the album have a more Country/Western feel and are good, although I like his maritime songs best.
Haunting Stan May 23, 2003 Scott Hulick (DC area) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is one of the better of Stan Rogers albums. There are beautiful lyrics and raw emotion. Turnaround is a good example. This is a thnking man's album.
Another Artist from Nova Scotia December 9, 2008 Alfred J. Galat (Bensalem) Until I saw the movie "Terry", I had never heard of Stan Rogers. His song "Turnaround" plays three times in the disc, including the end and the gallery of pictures during the filming. Stan could have written that song for Terry Fox, although he recorded it long before the Marathon of Hope. I have always like Anne Murray, so I thought I'd take a chance, if anything to get that title song. I found the folksy flavor a treat, and a trip to Nova Scotia. Canada lost quite an artist when Stan died in a freak accident in 1983.
