Brother for Sale finds the nation's most popular pigtailed pair in a straightforward sing-along with, mercifully, 10 of their more melodic-sounding friends. Any 5-year-old will warm to what's addressed here: there's an ode to peanut butter in which the praises of "chunks, lumps, gobs, and globs" of the gooey stuff are sung; an impassioned plea for a pup ("Desperate for a Dog"), in which it's made plain that a gerbil or frog won't do but "a collie or Dalmatian / a poodle or Alsatian / Maltese, Pekinese, please, oh please" will; and an all-kidding-aside reflection on the niceness of being "Hugged by You," especially after a bout of loneliness or scraping a knee. This album's standout, though, is "The New Kid," on which the full complement of friends helps to illustrate the saga of a young fellow who moves to a bustling new block from around the bend and unsuccessfully tries to befriend a boy on a bike (who has all the friends he needs), a girl in gold (who hates boys), a tyke in her crib (who only says "Waa! Waa!"), and, pathetically, a dopey dog (who's busy burying bones and has an unfriendly bark). Right after he hangs his head and starts to cry, everybody shows up to throw him a surprise birthday party, something they pull off without causing this song to go tumbling down a triteness chute. Also fun are the New Orleans-styled "Neighborhood Kitchen Pots and Pans Rhythm Band" and the reggae-infused "Uh-Oh Accident." --Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars great childhood memory   April 18, 2003

I believe it was my 7th birthday when I received this album as a present from my aunt and uncle. To this day, I still remember it being one of my favorite tapes ever. I never thought of the girls as being bad singers--since I was just such a huge fan when I was little, I loved listening to it over and over. The songs that Mary Kate and Ashley actually sang themselves were the ones I liked (especially "Peanut Butter")as opposed to the ones where the other choirs of kids came in to sing. Overall, though, I think it's a fun album for kids to enjoy.

I know that kids today are growing up watching a more grown-up, mature, and completely different Mary Kate and Ashley than the kids like me who remember them from their lighthearted "Full House" days, and even though I'm a lot more critical of them now I still feel that they've remained good role models for young girls. Their music albums are something that any fan would enjoy having. To me, this, their first album, will always be special to me.

This CD is very good, if you are a Olsenfan. Some songs aren't sang by them but the cd is almost great.

    5 out of 5 stars Cute!   October 21, 2000

This cd of theirs (their 1st one) is so cute, this music obviously though is fit for young kids, but I will listen to it, cuz Ive been a Mk and A fan forever! This cd is good to have for the fans.

1 out of 5 stars ADULT UNFRIENDLY   August 21, 2000

Although I didn't care for this collection, it did serve some good purpose. It has brought pleasure to many kids. If this collection has helped girls feel better about themselves and more confident in their abilities, then I am in full support of that. I, for one, can't stand the cotton candy tunes and the inane words. The girls' poor brother -- maybe if they really DO sell him, they can make even more millions and do even more inane kiddie tunes like this.

Just try driving and having to listen to this for long periods of time. That is quite a daunting experience.

1 out of 5 stars NOT GOOD   September 8, 2000

This is just tired sappy junk. It ain't their brother that's for sale. These girls have been for sale by the media since they were babies. They should stick to acting and leave singing alone because they can't sing for beans. They're cute. Senator, they're NO real singers.
