5 out of 5 stars More like Loretta and Tammy than today's "country"   September 2, 1999

Chely Wright is a throwback to when country was country. I rarely listen to so-called country radio anymore because I find Garth Brooks, Shania Twain and most of the other singers about as country as the Rolling Stones or Sister Sledge. Still, whenever I tune in for a few minutes I hope to hear one of Chely's songs.

Chely Wright is a breath of fresh "country" air. Not only is she true to Nashville's roots, she has a good voice and picks great songs. "Your Woman Misses Her Man" even eludes to Hank Williams and a few of his hits--references that would be lost on many of her contemporaries in the business.

Especially powerful and the reason I initailly bought this CD is the song "Shut Up and Drive." Despite its offbeat title, this is one of the prettiest tunes I've heard in quite some time.

To say Chely Wright is at the top of Nashville' current heap does her an injustice; rather let me say she could compete fairly against Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Moe Bandy and the best of the real country singers.

5 out of 5 stars Strong Album   February 24, 2002

Chely Wright had finally found success with this album, LET ME IN, the lead off single "Shut Up And Drive" was a hit on country radio and it wouldn't be long until people knew all about her. "Shut Up And Drive" is a strong inspiring song about a person's conscience helping them make the right decision, getting away from a bad relationship. Another great song on the album is the touching ballad "I Already Do", about admitting one's feelings for someone else, and letting them know they don't need to try so hard to get them to love, since they already do. The second single "Just Another Heartache" is a great uptempo song, about being afraid that a new relationship will end in heartache like all the others have. Chely sings with a strong, calming voice, and sings about issues that real people can relate to. Other highlights on LET ME IN, include the title track, 10 Lb Heart, and Your Woman Misses Her Man. A great album, give it a listen!

5 out of 5 stars Shut up and listen   August 22, 2005

This third album from Chely finally gained her much deserved recognition. The first single from the album (Shut up and drive) finds Chely advising a woman - possibly herself - to forget about the man she's just left. The second single (Just another heartache) is another excellent song, this time worrying about a new relationship. As far as I can tell, all the songs are originals except Feeling single seeing double, a song that Emmylou recorded for her Elite Hotel album back in the seventies.

Great as those songs are, I think some songs here are even better. My favorite is Emma Jean's guitar, a song about a guitar bought in a pawnshop. Chely wonders about Emma Jean, not knowing who she was (except that was obviously a country singer) or what became of her but nevertheless drawing inspiration from her. Another great song (Your woman misses her man) mentions Hank Williams and includes at least two of his song titles (I saw the light, I can't help it if I'm still in love with you) within the lyrics - and there may be others. One other song particularly worth mentioning (I already do) is a reminder that if you fall in love with somebody, you'd better make sure they know it. Four other wonderful songs (the title track, Is it love yet, Before you lie, 10 lb heart) complete an excellent album

This album should appeal to fans of traditional country and contemporary country alike. If you enjoy any type of country music, give Chely a listen. All her albums are brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Chely Wright's Let Me In   April 13, 2000

You'll find me more often giving science and math book reviews than music reviews, but Chely Wright's Let Me In is one exception. The one song Shut Up and Drive in this CD is, in my opinion, the fourth best song in the history of Country and Popular Music (the best is Down at the Twist and Shout, and most of Willy Nelson's songs tie for second place with Tammy Wynette's Stand by Your Man). These are Wake Up Songs and Charge the Barricades Songs. With them, Davy Crockett would have beat Santa Ana at the Alamo. For anybody who thinks Country Music is second rate, these songs are as good as Shakespeare's writings and the classical poets. They tell a story, make no mistake about it. Their stories touch the heart, not just the heartland. They are part of the Souls and the Spirits of the USA.
