    Editorial Reviews:

Kingpin may have given Jonathan Richman a brief cameo, but the singer-songwriter remained curiously absent from that film's alterna-rock soundtrack. Luckily, the Farrelly brothers' There's Something About Mary has Richman everywhere--he's graduated into actually becoming a plot device with his simple ditties and ubiquitous appearances. The soundtrack is no different. Tracks by the Dandy Warhols, the Push Stars, and the Lemonheads set the pop tone for this compilation, with highlights coming from Ivy, Ben Lee, and the Propellerheads. The best cuts come from Richman himself, though, with three outstanding originals: "True Love Is Not Nice," "Let Her Go into the Darkness," and the title track. Unlike the movie, there's a subtle touch to this album, and it translates to a better-than-average summer soundtrack. --Jason Verlinde

4 out of 5 stars Great -- but missing one great song   February 10, 2005

Mary had great songs alright, and this CD is a delightful collection. However, it is missing one of the best songs from the movie -- the song that plays over the end credits. It is a really wonderful song called (I think): The Way. It is by Billy Goodrum and is on a CD of his music that is available from the Love Street Bookstore (http://www.lovestreetbookstore.com/contact.htm). Everything on Billy's CD is absolutely great. I highly recommend it.

Awesome soundtrack. Looking for the song at the end as the credits roll. It's called "The Way", but not sure who performs it. Gotta get this song!

Even if i am off key sometimes. "Why do you build me up (build me up) buttercup baby just to let me down (let me down) and mez me around....." And pluse the movie says it all!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A good mix of music   December 1, 2000

If you love this movie, you will love this soundtrack. It's every bit as wacky, and fun, but also has touching moments. Like the lovely 'Mary's Prayer' sung by Danny Wilson, and 'Margo's Waltz' sung by Lloyd Cole. Plus, with the upbeat, fun 'Build me up Buttercup' and a mix of rock/pop/alternative. make this an album for all to enjoy. If you like the 'Dumb and Dumber' soundtrack, you will be sure to like this one too.

5 out of 5 stars The best Pop CD ever!   June 3, 2001
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

This CD has the finest collection of pop tunes I've yet to find! It's got the classics: Build me Up Buttercup, Is She Really Going Out With Him and Mary's Prayer along with other greats like Everyday Should be A Holiday, Speed Queen etc. Every song is an instant classic and the 'intermission' tracks from Johnathan Richman 'True Love is not nice' etc are just amazing. Possibly the most fun and entertaining CD out there, it makes you glad to be alive! Buy it now!
