4 out of 5 stars Young and loud (not snotty, though)   August 25, 2001

There's something about Idlewild that just tears your heart out for the sole reason of mending it back to health. The melodies are very reassuring as vocalist Roddy Woomble never ceases to strain his voice in pure catharsis. This six-song mini-album (the band's debut recording) is a youthfully energized assault on the emotionally oppressing aspects of the outside world, while stealthily attacking those that conquer within (tender melody muffled under...well, noise). The opening "Self Healer" is a marvelously abrasive piece, complete with Woomble's ardent whine and the band's relentless power. Speed, strength, distortion, a hackneyed but nonetheless successful combination. The following "Annihilate Now!" is another poignant piece of straight-ahead, melodic (a fitting word for the band itself) sensitivity. It sounds a lot like a song that belongs on the latest, "100 Broken Windows." The closer, "You Just Have To Be Who You Are," is a gritty, cacaphonic sonic workout with lots of feedback and droning yelps, ending with pleas for a captain. Although this is a moving work, it's really only for fans because of its loose, live feel and sometimes inconsistent songs ("Satan Polaroid"). It's not worth 40 bucks, no, but it is worthwhile for any fan.

5 out of 5 stars "Idlewild" a very underated indie band   April 16, 2000

Idlewild's first album "Captian" is a great album. The album begins with "Self Healer" a very fast song with a great melody from lead singer Roddy Woomble. The songs after this just keep up the pace of great guitar music of the past. The songs "Last night I missed all the fireworks" and "You just have to be who you are" are pure adrenaline rushes. The lyrics are also great, they are heartfelt and real rather then generic cliches. I'm sure any fan of indie/punk music with great melodies will love this album.

4 out of 5 stars hardcore punk rocking   June 16, 2005
    Eric D'Orazio (VA, USA)
This version of Captain is a Japanese import with 4 bonus tracks. Therefore, it makes the EP a full album. So, basically, it's Idlewild's first album. Fair enough...

The thing is that if you are a fan of the Idlewild of The Remote Part and Warnings/Promises, you probably won't like this CD. It exemplifies the hardcore punk stylings that littered Hope Is Important, only mellowing out at "Satan Polaroid" and another song I can't recall. Still, it is a really good CD if you like Idlewild a great deal. Track it down if you can. Definitely worth it.
