Iron Maiden's 1980 debut full-length LP is our first glimpse at the powerhouse and ultra-successful band it would become, albeit with an almost completely new version of the band than who is present on this album. Only guitarist Dave Murray and founder bassist Steve Harris remain in the band to this day from the players on this album. And while it may not contain any major hit songs or be voiced by the legendary Bruce Dickinson, it is no less an awesome album that if you haven't heard it by now, you must indeed be living under that proverbial rock.

I was first introduced to this album by my friend's brother, about 4 years ago, who owns pretty much EVERY album Iron Maiden has ever released, including hard to find imports and out of print albums. Up until this point I had only been into late '80s-early '90s Iron Maiden. And at first it took me some time to get around that this was Paul Di'Anno on vocals, and he has a significantly different voice than Bruce, not only that but the approach to the songs and the entire album is far different, it has a noticeable punk edge and also serves up some tender crooning from Di'Anno (check out the verses to "Remember Tomorrow" and "Strange World"), just the whole package is very raw and untamed with no real overproduction and it fits Di'Anno's rugged vocals perfectly.

If you are already a fan of Iron Maiden you probably own this or are on your way to buying it, and if you're thinking of buying it then you might want to do that. IRON MADIEN gives you your first glimpse of Eddie, it's a great cover too, simple, just him standing on the empty streets in the dead of night, most likely a reference to the opening track "Prowler", awesome tune. (Eddie also has hair here, guess even zombie's can lose thier hair over the years!) and don't forget "Running Free", the original and BEST version of this song. Bruce just can't do Di'Anno's songs as well..and who could? This album may not be a classic but it's a great debut that most already own. You can be one too. 7/9

5 out of 5 stars A classic album that every Metal Head should have.   February 2, 2009

Even though I am a huge fan of Bruce Dickenson, this album has a certain "raw-ness" that is very cool. Paul Diano is a great singer and the songs are very strong. A Must Have for sure.
