Tyrese Nostalgia March 12, 2003 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
When I saw that the new Tyrese CD was coming out, it made me feel nostalgic for his debut CD. I was starting to regret giving away his CD to a friend because she really liked it. However, I have since gotten a new copy, and I just love it. Listening to it again brought back sweet memories for me. Tracks such as "Sweet Lady" and "Lately" remind me of the times when I needed a good soak in a tub of warm music with the man I love (this is, of course, not a literal tub). "Ain't Nothin' Like A Jones" made me want to create my own choreography. "Promises" hit a core with me after going through countless relationships where the man made promises that he couldn't and didn't keep. All in all, I recommend this CD for anyone who is into love songs with good beats and lyrically strong. It's a good mix.

How could I ever forget to review this cd. I brought this cd when i came out...some time ago and just saw the video and realized that I needed to review his cd. This is a great cd and great first effort. There wasn't one song that I disliked on this. Actually I think this was his best effort. Yes I liked a couple of songs from his other cds but nothing like this. My fav tracks: 1. Nobody Else: I loved this track. I dont know if it was the anticipation of his album finally coming out but when this video came out it drew me. Fast track and catchy if you ask me. 2. Tell Me, Tell Me: decent tempo track...always managed to skip 3. Promises: Very nice 4.Sweet Lady: My very favorite...great slow jam. 5. Lately: Very sweet, slow song that just takes you slow ride. Very comforting. 6. Give love a try: Funky, mellow out song. It will make you bop your head. 7. Ain't Nothin' Like a Jones: Same cool feeling 8. You Get Yours: Ok, can listen to.... I'll stop here the whole dang cd is nice...worth listening to because its a classic.

Funk guitar, '70s soul string arrangements, hip-hop-inflected beats and sophisticated electronica-derived mixing techniques all play a part in the musical pastiche that is Tyrese's self-titled debut. While the album falls squarely in the contemporary R&B mold, and is bound to appeal to fans of the genre, Tyrese skillfully avoids many of the style's cliches. Though his voice is smooth and flexible, he never engages in R. Kelly-style histrionics, preferring to play it cool and communicate the emotions of the songs without over-extending himself. While all the tunes here are carefully produced and arranged, there's an agreeable grittiness that sets Tyrese apart from many of his contemporaries.

I am not really commenting on Tyrese's whole album, just a particular song. The song Sweet Lady, is a very important song to me. My 13 year old cousin was killed last year in April, and at his funeral his girlfriend played this song. He liked this song alot, and his girlfriend along with his mother felt that it should be played. I have just heard a part of the song and it made me cry. I have not heard this song since his funeral. There is, and always will be hundreds of songs that I like and mean alot to me but this song means more to me then anything else in the world and I just hope for my cousins sake that this song will never be forgotten, just like he will never be.
