Amazon.com Debbie Gibson never recorded anything as sexy as Britney Spears's white-funk smoker "...Baby One More Time." Unfortunately, neither does the 17-year-old Spears's debut album contain anything else that remotely approaches that instant hit single. A few of the disc's cuts are pleasantly catchy, but too much of its space is given over to icky ballads ("E-Mail My Heart"?) and other unconvincing moves such as the dancehall-lite "Soda Pop." --Rickey Wright

Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! February 23, 2006 The Cranky Reviewer 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
In 1999, Britney unleashed her unforgettable debut filled with hits like the title track, "Sometimes," and "You Drive Me Crazy." Well, Britney drives us all crazy, and she leaves us hungry for more of her brilliance. I can't WAIT for her new album to come out. It blow everything else out of the water. Go, Brit, go!!
Britney Spears-Pop Princess November 17, 2005 sweetsapphire83 (TN) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
When I first heard "Baby One More Time", I rejoyced. Finally, a pop princess for my generation. She can sing, dance, and videos are wonderful. Despite all the backlash (specifically the hater known as Misterjaw who refers to her as Bratney Sneers), I love her music. People are for the most part just jealous of her and insult her to make themselves feel good. It's not easy being in the public eye, and obviously Misterjaw doesn't know that.
You have to give her credit for some things May 4, 2000 mediaman44 (UT USA) 18 out of 22 found this review helpful
First of all, any cd that sells 12+ million copies is either a really good singer or a good scam artist. I personally believe that she is a good artist. Yes, she does need help with her singing but the songwriting is excellent and she is extremely actractive. Any guy who can't say that Britney Spears is hot is either blind or just weird. So, because of those two factors, ...Baby One More Time has sold 12+ million copies. You have to give her credit for another thing. She opened the door for females in the pop industry. Without her, Christina Agularia wouldn't be as big, neither would Mandy Moore, Jessica Simpson, and whoever else decides to join the bandwagon. I guess I enjoy pop music. I really enjoy this cd and probably will buy Oops I Did It Again as well. As far as a track by track overview here it is. 1...Baby One More Time-This song is what started the craze. I kinda like this song. It was a good choice for a first single 2. (You Drive Me) Crazy-I really like this song, especially the guitar solo in the middle of the song. Awesome. 3. Sometimes-Personally I don't like it. I heard it too much and it got annoying. 4. Soda Pop-I think this song is ok. It is a completely different style. 5. Born To Make You Happy-This is the song. This is the song that makes me say mmm Britney! Absoulutely without a doubt, the best song. 6. From The Bottom of My Broken Heart-I have heard alot of people say they were disappointed with the song. I kinda like it. It's Ok 7. I Will Be There-This is a pretty good song. It is basically just filler material 8. I Will Still Love You-Pretty Good 9. Thinking About You-This is the song that she released kinda half-heartedly. It is pretty good. 10. E-mail my Heart-I love this song. It really applys to this generation. It is very well written. 11. The Beat Goes On-I don't really like it. It is kinda dumb. Anyone who has doubts about buying this cd should just go and buy it. You wont regret it.
I tried to give it a chance... February 1, 2000 18 out of 22 found this review helpful
I admit that Britney Spears is one of the hottest teen pop stars today... she has sold millions of records around the world and nobody can deny that... However, her album is really nothing to jump up and down about...The first single (...baby one more time) was pretty good, but the rest of her songs are sort-of lame and too bubblegumish... Her voice is too "airy" and it seems like there is no real feeling behind it...
A New Low In Music History June 12, 2000 35 out of 45 found this review helpful
Whenever I write a review for something, I feel that a deep look into that thing is needed to properly judge it. It is hard to do this, though, with something as shallow and superficial as Britney Spears CD "Baby One More Time". However, I did look into it, but what I found was more disturbing than enjoyable.Throughout the history of music, there have always been the superficial pop artists- people who you either hate, love, or don't really give a care about. Britney Spears is a classic example of this sad phenomona- an utterly boring teen pop queen who thinks that music is simply about being the "hip" thing of the moment. Yes, she has some songs that are catchy, but in my opinion, not catchy-enjoyable; I was thinking more along the lines of catchy as in "GOD HELP ME RID MY HEAD OF THIS TUNE". And, while these songs may be "catchy", they certainly aren't artistic, or enjoyable in the long run. Britney pretends to express emotion, but none of her songs really express much of anything. The problem is that this music is simply the formula that people are willing to accept these days: fake, superficial synthesized music, accompanied by a young and only slightly talented voice. What makes it worse is that this music isn't what it appears to be: in truth, I doubt any of it was written by Britney herself. Believe me- in the corporate world, all these CD companies are trying to do is make money. The entire album is not aimed at being artistic, but rather engulfing today's youth in the current fad, while making as large a profit as possible. I've heard people say that they feel a real connection with Britney; I compare that to someone feeling a "real" connection to the guy at the fast-food counter who hands you your fries. The only connection she has with her fans is the worship that she accepts from them. Also, one of the biggest problems with the CD itself is the message it is communicating. In this day and age, when most teens are already very messed up and face hard decisions, do we really need pointless songs like "Soda Pop"? And, what no one seems to notice is the lyrics of the title track- what does "Hit me baby one more time" mean? Is it a sexual figure of speech? Or is it just to sound catchy? Or even worse, is it really just what it says? Are we promoting dating abuse by listening to it? Whatever it means, it can't be good. If the music isn't good, then why does it sell? (some of you may be asking) Well, two reasons. First of all, our society has come to accept the worst and most artificial of sounds to represent us. The second reason is very simple: many buy the CD just for it's so called "sexy" photo of Britney Spears. This is where it really get bad- many people don't care at all about the music. Hey, if they can jump on the bandwagon and get pretty pictures at the same time, they're in. It just proves an age old statement that you'd think we've overcome: sexuality sells. Sadly. Finally, I want to ask you, after reading this, what you think that this music is doing to the children and teens that listen to it? I feel sad just thinking about the girls obsessed with Britney, torturing themselves to look as thin and pretty as she does. (If she really does at all.) What kind of people are we to glorify Britney Spears, making her a role model for the youth of today? It is a vicious, self-destructive cycle this culture keeps going through, and we need to break out of it. The first step, my friends, is deciding not to buy CD's like this. I urge everyone who agrees with me to state their opinion, and be heard, and most of all, not to conform to these hideous standards set by society. And, on a closing not, I'd like to thank Amazon.com for having the bravery to let people speak their true opinion, and for letting them be heard. This is truly a revolutionary step in free speech.
