Amazon.com Debbie Gibson never recorded anything as sexy as Britney Spears's white-funk smoker "...Baby One More Time." Unfortunately, neither does the 17-year-old Spears's debut album contain anything else that remotely approaches that instant hit single. A few of the disc's cuts are pleasantly catchy, but too much of its space is given over to icky ballads ("E-Mail My Heart"?) and other unconvincing moves such as the dancehall-lite "Soda Pop." --Rickey Wright

Completely Unoriginal Cheesy Pop February 26, 2000 49 out of 71 found this review helpful
Right, this review may spawn off a few rebuttals but I don't really care. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. This is MY review though, and this is what I think. I have extremely varied musical tastes, so I can safely say I'm not biased. The music is not bad (hey, we've got a team of respectable songwriters here) hence such songs as "Born to Make You Happy" and "From The Bottom..."; however the singing is something left to be desired. Britney's voice is average-to-the-point-of-being-irritating; anyone with a half-decent set of pipes could pull this CD off. It's cheesy pop, not that it's a bad thing. As for the comparisons with Debbie Gibson, maybe the looks are the only thing that are similar. For one, Debbie Gibson wrote her own music and was good at it. The thing that gives her the edge over Britney anytime is, well, she can actually sing. Somehow I doubt, even with all the vocal training lessons that money can buy, Britney can't do much to alter the annoying tones in her voice. Also, I find the CD cover almost grotesque. There's just something disturbing about her wide-eyed, blank "nothing-going-on-up-there" expression.
No long-term future for her... September 9, 2000 41 out of 55 found this review helpful
When I first got this CD, I thought it was great. The songs were catchy. But now, I regret, and it's collecting dust while my 98 Degrees and Will Smith CD's are getting all the spins. Here's why:Her songs are great at first, because you don't really pay attention to the lyrics. But when you do, it's sickening. In "Baby One More Time", it's like pretty guys are the source for her oxygen. And people are wondering why girl-morale is at an all-time low. No, it's not because the NBA and NHL don't let no females join. It's because of celebrities who send the wrong message. I'm a boy, a 12 year old boy, to be specific. And since Britney Spears, Mandy Moore and Jessica Simpson came out, I've been noticing my classmate girls paying so much attention to their bodies and not their intellect. Argh! It's pure sickening. I do not count Christina Aguilera as a stupid pop fad because she does have talent, while in the midst of the teenpop wars, just like 98 Degrees. The reason why Britney is so popular, I'm sorry to say, is that guys are more perverts than girls. Sure, girls will say, "Oh! I wish I was married to Justin Timberlake, and he's always shirtless". But perverted, twisted guys would say, "Man, I wish I had just one night with hot Britney". Blech! All in all, she has no future, when her good looks fade away. Yes, she is quite pretty, although I can name a lot of people who look better. I wish she'd stop acting like a hooker all the time. She's only 18. Her voice is thin as Saran-wrap. When she tries to higher her voice, it sounds like a vinyl record being scratched. She should've just gone into modelling or something. She's definitely not cut out to be a singer, or god forbig, and actress.
A New Low In Music History June 12, 2000 34 out of 43 found this review helpful
Whenever I write a review for something, I feel that a deep look into that thing is needed to properly judge it. It is hard to do this, though, with something as shallow and superficial as Britney Spears CD "Baby One More Time". However, I did look into it, but what I found was more disturbing than enjoyable.Throughout the history of music, there have always been the superficial pop artists- people who you either hate, love, or don't really give a care about. Britney Spears is a classic example of this sad phenomona- an utterly boring teen pop queen who thinks that music is simply about being the "hip" thing of the moment. Yes, she has some songs that are catchy, but in my opinion, not catchy-enjoyable; I was thinking more along the lines of catchy as in "GOD HELP ME RID MY HEAD OF THIS TUNE". And, while these songs may be "catchy", they certainly aren't artistic, or enjoyable in the long run. Britney pretends to express emotion, but none of her songs really express much of anything. The problem is that this music is simply the formula that people are willing to accept these days: fake, superficial synthesized music, accompanied by a young and only slightly talented voice. What makes it worse is that this music isn't what it appears to be: in truth, I doubt any of it was written by Britney herself. Believe me- in the corporate world, all these CD companies are trying to do is make money. The entire album is not aimed at being artistic, but rather engulfing today's youth in the current fad, while making as large a profit as possible. I've heard people say that they feel a real connection with Britney; I compare that to someone feeling a "real" connection to the guy at the fast-food counter who hands you your fries. The only connection she has with her fans is the worship that she accepts from them. Also, one of the biggest problems with the CD itself is the message it is communicating. In this day and age, when most teens are already very messed up and face hard decisions, do we really need pointless songs like "Soda Pop"? And, what no one seems to notice is the lyrics of the title track- what does "Hit me baby one more time" mean? Is it a sexual figure of speech? Or is it just to sound catchy? Or even worse, is it really just what it says? Are we promoting dating abuse by listening to it? Whatever it means, it can't be good. If the music isn't good, then why does it sell? (some of you may be asking) Well, two reasons. First of all, our society has come to accept the worst and most artificial of sounds to represent us. The second reason is very simple: many buy the CD just for it's so called "sexy" photo of Britney Spears. This is where it really get bad- many people don't care at all about the music. Hey, if they can jump on the bandwagon and get pretty pictures at the same time, they're in. It just proves an age old statement that you'd think we've overcome: sexuality sells. Sadly. Finally, I want to ask you, after reading this, what you think that this music is doing to the children and teens that listen to it? I feel sad just thinking about the girls obsessed with Britney, torturing themselves to look as thin and pretty as she does. (If she really does at all.) What kind of people are we to glorify Britney Spears, making her a role model for the youth of today? It is a vicious, self-destructive cycle this culture keeps going through, and we need to break out of it. The first step, my friends, is deciding not to buy CD's like this. I urge everyone who agrees with me to state their opinion, and be heard, and most of all, not to conform to these hideous standards set by society. And, on a closing not, I'd like to thank Amazon.com for having the bravery to let people speak their true opinion, and for letting them be heard. This is truly a revolutionary step in free speech.
The best teen album of all time! January 28, 2000 33 out of 59 found this review helpful
I just love Britney Spears. She is sexy, honest, and sweet. What more can a guy want? This has to be the absolute best teen album I've ever heard. Britney has something that all the boy bands and female teenie boppers of the late 90's didn't have. She is definitely the best thing to come into pop music since Madonna (her idol). I love the songs "You Drive Me Crazy" and "Baby One More Time," as well as the unreleased (as of now) "Born to Make You Happy." Buy this album and you will never regret it. A+
HOW CAN YOU SAY SHE IS BAD? This is possibly the best CD... December 4, 1999 32 out of 56 found this review helpful
...that I have ever bought! You are probably going, "Oh, it's the only CD she's bought," but I own Lauryn Hill, Backstreet Boys, N'SYNC, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, Sarah MacLachlan, Jessica Simpson, Smash Mouth, 98 degrees, TLC, Sugar Ray, and more. Every song has it's own kind of personality, "Baby One More Time" is for dancing, "Sometimes," is for romance, "Drive Me Crazy," is for fun and partying, "Soda Pop" is just for hanging out and having a good time, "Born to Make You Happy" is to think about loved ones and past boyfriends or girlfriends. I really enjoyed this CD, and I am completely dissapointed with all of you who wrote that this CD was a failure. Why buy it if you don't like her, which that is what some of you did, it seems like. This album is one I can guarantee fans of Britney will love, but please be supportive of her! She practically created Christina Aguilera and Mandy Moore and all of those blonde pop sensation girlies, she is like a new Madonna for the next millennium. She rocks!
