Amazon.com On their 1997 release, Dude Ranch, juvenile hardcore-pop band Blink 182 tickled the funny bone with an assortment of dumb sex jokes, off-color artwork, and between-song skits, including one of a dog drinking from a freshly peed in toilet. So, two years down the road, have the band matured at all? One look at the cover of Enema of the State, which features cover art of a tarted-up blonde nurse donning a rubber glove, provides the easy answer. Fortunately, Enema supports the humor with strong musicianship. The songs are more dynamic and multitempoed than those on Dude Ranch, sounding like a cross between the Descendents and Fountains of Wayne. And unlike the glut of alt-rock releases that offer one or two memorable songs, Enema is flush with instantly memorable melodies and ear-pleasing harmonies. Good, dirty fun--no more, no less. --Jon Wiederhorn

The best CD in the punk rock catagory May 25, 2000 116 out of 152 found this review helpful
This is by far the best CD that I have ever owned. Blink 182 not only delivers an outstanding performance but a hilarious one as well. Enema of the State is ideal for punk rock or even alternative fans.Dumpweed - Doesn't make a lot of sense, but has a foot-tapping rythm that's real easy to get into. Don't Leave Me - Pleasant, annoying tune that no one would mind your singing it out loud. Aliens Exist - This song is one of my favorites-it has a real punk beat with brilliant lyrics that have that funny, immature Tom DeLonge ring to them. Going Away to College - captures the uncertainty and intimidatingness of getting out into the real world-plus it has some awsome tunes. What's My Age Again? - Exceptional guitar-playing and extremely funny and absurd words that you would expect from a fifteen-year-old adolescent. Dysentary Gary - Puts a spiteful breakup into a fabulous song. Adam's Song - Widely popular and for a good reason. Its one of the only songs on this album that forgets immaturity and goes to a deeper point of troubled teenager's view. All the Small Things - Annoying tune that you don't mind getting under your skin. The Party Song - Fast paced, rap-style song that speeds up and slows down while it leaves your tongue tied. Mutt - My second favorite song on this album-Tom DeLonge really knows how to croon a story about a shallow, mislead couple. Wendy Clear - Not one of the funniest or most popular, but Mark Hoppus's vocals make up for it. Anthem - Awsome display of raw talent by drummer Travis Barker as he serves up an impressive beat in this rebellious song of misfits and outcasts. A must-have addition to any punk rock fan's collection. If you like anything remotely close to Blink 182, then you'll love this CD.
Blink 182 is the NOT the N'Sync of Punk January 20, 2000 37 out of 51 found this review helpful
People in the punk/metal scene need to get over their "holier then thou" attitude why do people freak out when their favorite band goes from playing "6 bands Eight bucks" shows to $35 dollar concerts. We WANT them to be sucessful, so you knew Blink when Scott Raynor was the drummer and you tortured your parents with "Depends" off Cheshire Cat that doesn't mean they're sell-outs now that employees of the GAP like Blink. Britney Spears and N'Sync don't even write their own songs. Blink NOT only WRITES their own music, but get this...THEY ACTUALLY PLAY THEIR OWN INSTRUMENTS! How many Backstreet Boys can do that! No matter what you listen to, buy this CD. Blink 182 is a versatile band you have "What's my age.." and "Adam's Song" on one album showing you Blink's playful and meaningful sides. This band has come along way from their early days and this CD showcases it's maturity while sticking to their punk roots. Blink 182 has grown up...I wonder have you?
PLEASO READO ESO REVIEWO November 16, 1999 16 out of 22 found this review helpful
Well, if you listen to it, all of their songs are practically the same-- but it sounds great! I really enjoy listening to this CD and if you are into punk rock, get Enema of the State. And, hey parents, if you won't let your kid get this CD because of the cover, please reconsider. The CD is hardly like that. It is just a great piece of work put together by a great band. The first track, "Dumpweed," contains a lot of really good drum breaks (Travis is a great drummer.) "Don't Leave Me" is catchy and has a good beat to it. "Aliens Exist" and "Going Away To College" are good examples of the band's creativity. "What's My Age Again?" is fun to listen to; there is some great guitarring in there. 6-12 are quite good, can't really describe them all, but yes all good. I like creativity, therefore I like Blink-182. This band is creative, all right, just check out their music videos. One last thing about it is I like the way the songs all slide from one to the next, it is really cool. Overall, I'd give it a 9/10 but that's not an option. So, in the name of time, my life I must get back to, and space on this review, I bid you farewell, and enjoy Blink-182's fabulous CD, Enema of the State.
What's with the 5 star reviews? This CD is utterly terrible! May 24, 2004 16 out of 41 found this review helpful
Okay, first off, I would like to say that I DID listen to the CD, and not just a hater posting an unfavorable review. Neither do I have a problem with punk, as some great bands such as Weezer and the Offspring make really great music, so don't think I'm biased against the musicians or musical style at all. After a friend lent me this CD, telling me how great it was in the process, my expectations were high and doubts low. Of course, I'd listened to many sermons about how terrible Blink 182 were, but I figured maybe that was all unjust criticism. I FIGURED WRONG! When I first popped in this CD, I was greeted with the song Dumpweed, which first presented me to the terrible vocals of Mark Hoppus, who sounds like he's whining and crying at the same time. It literally burns the ears to listen to him! Of course, Dumpweed has the same guitar riff the entire time, and not just on Dumpweed! ON EVERY SINGLE SONG, THE BEAT NEVER CHANGES! The only good thing at all about Blink 182 that I can find is that the drummer is half-decent, but its hard NOT to be able to follow along such juvenile guitar playing. I won't do a song-by-song review, as all the songs are terrible, but maybe "All the Small Things" would merit a 2/10, but it seriously gets annoying after the first listen. Plus, with 12 songs, this album manages to be ONLY 35:23 seconds long, a short album that only shortens the amount of money in your wallet! It also goes to show Blink 182 doesn't really TRY to make good songs, they just figure out a beat and jam to it for about 2 minutes! Also, who would ever think that this album has EXCEPTIONAL or HILARIOUS lyrics? I found the lyrics to be more like JUVENILE and ANNOYING! Adam's Song? Its just Mark Hoppus talking(Stupidly) behind the same guitar beat until the chorus, where Mark Hoppus screams like a dying hyena for 2 seconds, and then it reverts back to the same guitar beat again! If you want Adam's Song, just repeat that about 3 times and you have the entire song! But probably the worst thing about the entire album is that EVERY SINGLE SONG sounds like the other one! Other than the ok All the Small Things, all the other songs sound exactly congruent to all the others! I mean compare Adam's Song to The Party Song! Although the Party Song is a little harder, I sware that its the same Guitar riff on both songs! If you're looking at Enema of the State because you heard that Blink 182 is a great Punk band, get off this page and instead search for better Punk bands like The Offspring, Weezer, and for a golden oldies, The Clash! I guarantee if you listen to those groups, you will be listening to Great CDs, instead of sub-par crap like this. This is probably the worst CD to ever grace my stereo, and it's even worse than Metallica's St. Anger, and that's saying something! All the reviewers who gave 5 star reviews to this album have been manipulated by the idiocy of MTV, who supports this load of trash and also promotes the always-stupid Avril Lavigne, the even-worse than Blink 182 the utterly terrible Newfound Glory, and the pop-(crap)punk disgrace of Good Charlotte! I won't even mention the All American Rejects(I just did though) because I'm sure that nobody would even listen to that crap!Although I respect my other reviewers opinions, I don't seriously think that they really know the Genre of Punk or are simply to juvenile to notice this CD's crappiness! To misquote the equally terrible J. L(H)O, "Don't be fooled by the 5 star reviews this CD got, It still sucks a whole lot!"NOT RECOMMENDED, DO NOT BUY, IF THIS REVIEW WAS HELPFUL TO YOU PLEASE REMEMBER TO CLICK THE HELPFUL BUTTON! All the small things... December 2, 1999 15 out of 20 found this review helpful
...really can make a difference when listening to a band's latest album and comparing it to an old one. And if the small things make a difference, the BIG things spell nothing but "change". And the change is for the better with Blink 182's latest release. Sure, call them sellouts (you know you'd sellout if given the opportunity), but what the band has produced here is cleaner pop-punk rock with a sound that hasn't smashed the Top 25 until now (give them SOME credit). The bottom line is, I have all 3 CDs and this is equally as good as the others. I like to see a band change rather than making no new strides over their career. Highlights of this CD are "Going Away to College", "Don't Leave Me", "Aliens Exist", "Anthem", "Adam's Song"...and oh yeah...EVERY SONG ON THE ALBUM! It's well put together...and if you can't except the changes they've made, don't listen to them anymore. With all the new fans they've acquired, they won't miss you for a second.
