Masterpeace....not really but its art. November 8, 1999 Steven L. Miller (Plainfeild,Il) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This cd starts out good until David Wayne opens his mouth. Dave's singing brings me back to the 80's and hair bands.Turn down the tremble man. What happend to Mike Howe? Don't get me wrong it's nice that the original band is back, but Howe fit the puzzle better. No where near as good as "Blessing" & "Human Factor". Did they lose the sophistication that I feel these two albums had. It's not a bad album just lacking. Guys get Howe back! ---still you must buy this to support the bands that haven't sold out from thoughs that have Metalica(we promise the new album will sound like are old stuff NOTE:they say this every time they come out with an new album), Megadeath
Not too bad! It grows on you. August 22, 2005 Neburo 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
It's not original, but keeping true to metal. I am not too knowledgable on this band, but what gather is that this is a reunion-type album with Dave Wayne. He died only a few months ago! This is the only album I've heard, but if this is their last album together -- they did a pretty good job! I was surprised how good the writer Kurdt Vanderhoof was! Brillant writer. These guys could talk about anything and make a bad situation cool! :) It's sounds like a lot like Metallica in some ways (if you forget about the screechy voice!), but when you listen to more tracks, you realize it's more or less a continuation of Metallica -- something they should have done instead of brought that very ordinary Snake/Black Album. They seem to be more well-blanced with lyrics -- kinda more like Iron Maiden/Bruce Dickinson in this department. His voice takes a while to getting use to. This band is still kinda new to me, but I am sure I'll be getting more albums from these metal men soon! :) Let me say goodbye to Dave. It won't suffer anymore so REST IN PEACE.
You can buy into this Church... July 11, 2000 Shawn H (Pittsburgh, Pa.) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
and no one will laugh. Some of the originators of the Bay Area sound and more importantly a band that comes out of that now household name toddlin' town of Seattle, Metal Church are back in original line up sans Craig Wells. Smoking and chugging along without skipping a metallic beat, everyone's favorite pastors prove they can still blast away at the metal masses with skill and juicy riffery. Dave Wayne's vocal performance is now more solid and rooted. Served up right in a picky metalhead era. Nice to see Dave's absence didn't cause him to lose track with the times. Sure Kurdt Vanderhoof is the main driving force and influence, as he has been throughout their career, this guy is an unsung genius. Last few albums have been lyrical as well as musical gemstones and it doesn't stop here! Opening freight train "Sleeps With Thunder", "Falldown" and mid-album monsters "Kiss For The Dead" and "Faster Than Life" are classics, "Sand Kings" is a cold steel genius of an album ender. Glad to see K.V. is back in the lineup after a solo stint. One shortcoming, bad choice in cover tunes with the yawner Aerosmith drip-tune "Toys in The Attic", which really isn't a good song no matter who serves it up.
Give Me More September 28, 1999 Mark Romero (Florida) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Metal Church comes through with their latest disc, Masterpeace. Lots of energy, riffs, etc. It quickly quenched my appetite for this underrated band but I want more. David Wayne's vocals aren't the same as they were on the first two albums. He kind of sounds like Blitz Ellsworth from Overkill now, but he still sounds great. Buy it!!
masterpeice indeed December 20, 2006 Dean Adams (Wenatchee, Wa USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Being a Metal Church fan from the begining, this album ranks high among my favorites. At this point in their career, I had given up hope of ever hearing a Vanderhoof/Wayne line-up again, yet here it was. Masterpeace is a fine polished slab of metallic brillience. So what if it isn't the face melting onslought as the first album, this is a beautifully crafted work of metal, and a great portrait of a gracefully aging power metal band. I have bought several copies of this album to give to some of my younger 'metal head' freinds. 'Faster Than Life' is one of the finest Metal Church songs ever, right up there with 'Beyond the Black', 'Metal Church' and 'Method to Your Madness'. Miss you Dave.
