Amazon.com Actress Jennifer Lopez's debut album fails in its attempt to provide a worthy musical backdrop to her much-discussed diva-esque image. Over the course of 13 songs, On the 6 displays barely a glimmer of the verve, poise, and sensuality of her screen performances in the likes of Out of Sight. With little vocal talent to rely on, Lopez generally seems content to ape Madonna's middle register like any happy radio listener. Similarly, several of the tracks here seem too rooted in the Latin-lite clichés of "La Isla Bonita." With practice--more Lopez CDs will surely follow in the wake of 6's success--the star might develop into a singer worth reckoning with, but for now she stands as a wonderful actress and a musical artist with an unengaging album to her name. --Rickey Wright

If I Had "My Money Back" May 20, 2000 28 out of 41 found this review helpful
Whoever told Jennifer Lopez that she could seriously needs a full-frontal lobotomy. Ms. Lopez, whose only claim to fame is her gluteus maximus, provides her listeners with an hour of sheer torture as she tries to struggle to break a note. In the same way that Paula Abdul became a star, Jennifer proves us that her best friend is a good synthesizer. If you thought her acting was bad (she appears like she is reading cue cards all the time) Jennifer's singing is so artificial and bad, that it makes Puff Daddy's "Forever" album (which flopped) look like a welfare-case when it comes to talent. Here are my reviews of the songs on this album:1. If You Had My Love - I would change the title to "If I Had a Voice." Just hearing her trying to break a note on this track will make you want to hit the stop button on your CD player. 2. Should've Never - That's right....She "Should've Never" made this album. Awful! 3. Too Late - Yes, It's "Too Late!" She already has made the worst album of 1999. 4. Feelin' So Good - I didn't "feel so good" when I saw the video or heard this song. Ms. Lopez says she is part of the Latin Explosion. I disagree. This song proves that she is lost in her cultural identity, more so than Bryant Gumbel. 5. Let's Get Loud - Oh, please let's not. We don't want to hear the dogs barking all night after listening to this song. Pure dance-wannabe song. 6. Could This Be Love - Probably a tribute to Puff Daddy,it made me fall asleep listening to it on my CD player. 7. No Me Ames - In this song you'll hear a true and talented voce...that of Marc Anthony's. He is the hidden gem in this album. Jennifer sounds like she learned Spanish overnight with a Berlitz tape course. Only listened to it because I am a great admirer of Anthony. 8. Waiting For Tonight - Catchy tunes can't save this song. Pure synthesizer! Her voice is hardly heard! 9. Open Off My Love - It won't be a top 25 song. Trust me! 10. Promise Me You'll Try - Slow and boring. Just like her acting. Horrible sounding ballad. 11. It's Not That Serious - Her singing is not "serious". There are true Latin Divas out there such as La India and Brenda K. Starr, but Lopez is not! 12. Talk About Us - If "us" means her and Puff Daddy, than I'll pass on this one. 13. No Me Ames (ballad version) - Same song as #7, only more slower and without the salsa beat. 14. Una Noche Mas - Same as "Waiting for Tonight" but in Spanish only. Trust me! Spend your money discovering true Latin divas/groups that are hidden out there. La India, Brend K. Starr, Nuyorican Soul, Safire, are all wonderful alternatives to this album. Ms. Lopez must realized that she doesn't have a talented bone in her body (the gluteus maximus is a muscle, not a bone). I would urge all true music lovers to pass this one by, and discover true dance divas like those mentioned above. Jennifer please stick to dancing!
#1 SUMMER CD OF 1999 and ON! May 7, 2000 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
Though it has been nearly a year since Jennifer released On The 6, I am still to this day listening everyday to this CD. Trust, if you like Madonna and Janet, you'll love this CD. There is something for everyone on this CD. There's ballads, latin, dance, R&B, and a little of hip hop to. Jen shines best on the uptempo and R&B cuts, like Waiting For Tonight, Let's Get Loud, If You Had My Love, Feelin So Goos, etc. She can also belt out the ballads, showing true emotion in both Should've Never and Promise Me You'll Try. Believe, this is the type of material that makes an album hot. So, forget what all the others say about this CD, cause just one listen to any of the songs and you'll know you have definately spent your money's worth!
A Poor Attempt for Music February 28, 2000 15 out of 20 found this review helpful
I found this cd to be very repititous. She relies on the same beats and the same "theme" to every song. I dislike "Waiting for Tonight" the most though, perhaps because all she seems to do is say "waiting for tonight" and then follow it by a resounding "whoaaaa"...and it seems those two lines are the whole basis of the song. I dont know about anyone else, but after hearing her yell out "whooaaa" for the 50th time, I turned the cd off. The most famous song "If you had my love" is good at hiding a bad voice...it emphasis's dance beats with an up tempo melody...distracting the listener from Lopez's generic sounding voice. The rest of the disc is a sad attempt at music also. Personally, I think she was just another singer jumping on the "Latina" bandwagon. It also shows that by having the right connections (ie-Puff Daddy) and by showing enough skin...you can get even richer, without having talent. Personally I think she needs to tone up, put some clothes on, and take singing lessons. Next please....
Jennifer Lopez has no voice November 19, 1999 15 out of 27 found this review helpful
First of all, who said that it isn't possible for someone to act and sing? Personally, I think Elvis and Cher have done a decent job at both. Jennifer Lopez's talent as an actress is marginal at best. But as a singer, she just doesn't cut it. Just like Madonna, she has absolutely no range and plans on selling records by putting sexy photos on their album covers. Of course since Latin music is all the rage right now she figures she can use her background to make a profit. Obviously, like Madonna again, she's all about the money and has no real talent to push her product. On The 6 is a pop album. Pop music tends to put less emphasis on lyrics and music and more on singing. Someone with a good voice (ex. Christina Aguilera) has what it takes to succeed in pop music. Lopez, however, sings in a tired monotone nasal pattern throughout, which just about anyone can do. If you hear any voice talent on this album, it is coming from one of Lopez's backup singers. The only reason she even got a contract was because she is a famous actress. Face it, the music industry is favoring good looks over talent write now (can anyone say Britney and Backstreet?) and Lopez is an obvious beneficiary. Her weak voice certainly would not have warranted a contract if she were unknown. Anyway - to the songs. All of them are catchy fluff - no more, no less. It's run of the mill pop with a tiny bit of Latin elements, with weak singing from Lopez and better vocals from her backing vocalists. Trust me - this album is not worth your time or money. If anything, this proves that all you need is a pretty face and some curves to make it in the music industry.

First of all, this ghetto chick is just another britney spears who cant sing and relies only on image to sell records. This chick cant write, produce or sing and is only a puppet of the commercial music industry. All of the lyrics are boring and the music isnt even good when you think about it.She is a terrible role model for her community,as she is saying that all puerto rican women are easy, greedy and self centered.Dont support her music and vote for my review.
