5 out of 5 stars An "must have" cd for McDermott fans   January 23, 2000

Purchasing "Love Is A Voyage" completes my collection of all of John McDermott's cd's. I have always preferred his traditional Irish and Scottish songs, but in this collection he proves that he can touch the heart with more contemporary music. While it's nearly impossible to pick a favorite, I especially love, "One Small Star", "Never Be The Sun" and "Guardian Angel." John McDermott's music is incomparable and he has, simply, the most beautiful tenor voice I have ever heard. A new cd is scheduled to be released in the fall and I can hardly wait. If you have ONLY heard John on the Irish Tenor's wonderful cd's please purchase one of John's also. I promise you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars are not enough!   October 19, 1999

I thought "Remembrance" would be my favorite until I bought "Shamrocks and Heather". It was my favorite and then I bought "Love Is a Voyage". Now I have two favorite John McDermott CDs and several more that I really like! I love "Daughter of Mine" and "One Small Star"! John's rendition of all these songs are beautiful beyond words. I can't get enough of his music and hope he will record more. I met him in Denver and found him to be just as wonderful in person as he is in his music. He is a "down home" person who has not forgotten his roots. His reverance of and devotion to his family make him a truly great artist and human being. Come to Colorado Springs, John!

5 out of 5 stars A must for John McDermott fans   September 17, 1999

I have been purchasing John's recordings since "discovering" him a mere six months ago as a result in his participation as one of "The Irish Tenors" on PBS. In "Love is a Voyage" John departs from his Celtic roots and shows the amazing versitility of his warm, rich voice. He brings you to tears with "One Small Star" and "Winter Clothes" and fills you with the joy of love as he sings "Guardian Angel" and "Friend Like You." It is impossible to choose a favorite on this cd. John McDermott has, simply, the most glorious voice I have ever heard.

    5 out of 5 stars Bravo!   August 31, 1999

This newest compliation of John McDermott's recordings is a beautiful change of pace for those fans who are used to more traditional Celtic tunes. His superb voice and arresting style continue to infuse his music with passion and soul. The arrangements, background vocals and occasional duets enhance each piece, making it difficult to choose a favorite (although "One Small Star" remains a personal favorite). This CD is a "must have" for his loyal fans, a "should have" for new fans and an "ought to have" for anyone who appreciates listening to a master at his craft. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars A more contemporary McDermott excels again!   June 20, 2000

Once again, John McDermott's strikingly lovely tenor make us pause in appreciation of the human voice. As with every other John McDermott release, "Voyage" has one wonderful song after another; it's merely a matter of personal taste as to which ones will be your favorites. I'll focus on the ones I particulary like, although it is not that easy to narrow it down. The CD starts out with "Daughter of Mine," a tender look at his daughter's wedding day from a father's viewpoint. Brides and their fathers will shed a tear over this one as they "twirl 'round the floor." "Natives" and "Steal Away," featuring duets with Alison Girvan are absolutely lovely contemporary pieces. If you saw the original "Irish Tenors" concert last year, you'll probably remember "Voyage," a charming tribute of the ups and downs of marriage. (I think this would be another great wedding song -- for the parents' dances, providing they're not divorced, of course)! Then John takes a turn on the Lennon/McCartney tune "Here, There And Everywhere" and does so masterfully. With "When You And I Were Young, Maggie" and "Mary Of Argyle" we're taken back to more traditional tunes and they are among my favorites of that genre. The last two songs are beautiful. "Sweet Sister Mary, a duet with Maria Antonakas, is reminiscent of the more traditional songs, and "One Small Star," written by Eric Bogle reflects the feelings people have over the death of their loved ones. It is very moving. John McDermott continues to earn our respect and appreciation for the beauty he puts in every song and for caring enough about his fans to have each release FILLED with lovely songs. If you already have a copy, buy another one for someone you love.
