Amazon.com A cold-blooded critic once observed of an Eddie Money album that it's probably unrealistic to expect art from a guy named Money. In which case, it's equally unrealistic to expect down-home country music from a guy named Urban. Sure enough, the Australian-born Urban's debut solo album combines canned fiddle 'n' steel licks with hip-hop-flavored drum loops. The rock edge that characterized his previous band, the Ranch, has been replaced by pretty-boy poses and puppy-love lyrics aimed straight at the young female demographic. Not coincidentally, two of the Dixie Chicks show up to sing backup on the Cajun-lite "I Wanna Be Your Man (Forever)." The only demonstration of Urban's guitar prowess is the by-the-numbers instrumental "Rollercoaster." A couple of the better songs hint at darker moods and adult emotions that might be closer to the real Keith Urban. But too often he comes across as another latter-day Urban Cowboy who has simply traded in the shiny boots and Stetson for bare feet and an earring. --Rick Mitchell

One of the Best CD's I Bought This Fall October 28, 1999 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
I love this CD. The songs make you feel as if you are reading someone's journal -- it's almost a diary of a relationship -- the ups and downs, the joys and the pain. Keith definitely sings about topics that I, as a 32 year old man, want to hear. His guitar playing is great, his songwriting is real, and you can hear the truth in his voice. This is a CD that I plan to give to friends. If you like Jackson Browne, Dixie Chicks, Merle Haggard, James Taylor, Jewel, Lucinda Williams.....you will like this cd. I read the review that the Amazon music reviewer gave -- I'm sorry, but I don't think he listened to the same album I did -- I think he quickly scanned his copy and moved on. This is an album to be savored -- to listen to over and over, and find new nuances each time you do.
excellent debut! July 20, 2000 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
Rick Mitchell's review - for Amazon - of Keith Urban's debut CD totally misses the point. This is a CD of good songs and good playing. The production is appropriately clean and hi-tech. Mitchell laments that Urban spends little time exploring themes of adult angst and disillusionment. I've got news for you Rick, I'm a 44-year-old who has experienced enough cynicism, nihlism, anger, and pain to last me a good long time. If a person as talented as Keith Urban cares to present direct, cynicism-free songs in such an appealing way, I am 100% for it. This CD isn't just for those who believe in love and life, it's for those who WANT to believe.
LOVE IT! October 2, 2000 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Hi there, I read the review from the guy from Amazon and I beg to differ! As Jon from NYC said in his review, that guy must have listened to a completely different CD!. The CD is excellent, I can't stop playing it! Keith Urban has beautiful songs, all with meaningful lyrics and I think he is fantastic. To anyone who thinks otherwise, take some time to listen to the CD again, listen to the lyrics, listen to his voice and then see if you still feel the same... if you do, then he's obviously not your cup of tea, but don't write reviews on webpages like these to discourage others from buying his CD, because they will miss out on the beauty of his voice and music just because you don't like it. Let them make their own opinion.
Awesome! December 20, 2004 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Alright, I'm really into metal music, but i also like country, mostly because its what my parents listen to. I absolutley love Keith Urban! When i first heard him on the radio, I was impressed. He's awesome! I can't wait to get his new cd, Be Here.
SIMPLY IRRESISTABLE July 3, 2001 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Keith Urban is amazing. I bought this album when "Your Everything" was released and am expecting to replace it soon due to over use. This CD is the perfect mix of country and rock. It has love ballads that are sung with such feeling that they will melt your heart yet it has several tracks that make you want to dance or drive fast (not sure which). To the reviewer who said that only one track exibits Keith Urban's guitar prowess I say, "Watch him play! Whether live or an a video, Keith rocks!" I think his earring, barefoot, austrailian accent style helps to distiguish him from others and his cross over style will appeal to country and rock lovers alike! He is simply irresistable. This cd is a MUST have!
