This compilation does not contain any liner notes (so you're not missing anything if you don't understand French) but the song selection is interesting, containing a few songs not generally found on compilations from Britain and America. There are some obvious selections including Ring of fire, Orange blossom special, I walk the line, San Quentin and Folsom prison blues. One song that I regard as obvious but which is frequently omitted from American compilations despite being a massive hit is A thing called love, but you can find it here. Oney is a great song about a worker approaching retirement, who has been treated badly by his employer for years and seeks revenge. Custer is a song about the famous general as seen from a Native American perspective. Waiting for a train is a cover of the old Jimmie Rodgers classic.
Other great songs not usually included in Johnny Cash compilations are Girl from the canyon, Remember the Alamo, Oh what a dream and the western theme, Bonanza!
June Carter provides backing vocals on City of New Orleans and duets with Johnny on If I were a carpenter and Jackson.
This is not the strongest collection of Johnny's music but it is one of the more interesting compilations. It is one of a series of country compilations all titled La Legende. Others in the series include Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette and Rosanne Cash.
