On the wings of the hit club single "Blue (Da Ba Dee)," the Italian group Eiffel 65's Europop has soared into the ever-fleeting good graces of the dance-pop scene. The song is "a story about a little guy who lives in a blue world," and while it seems that the color of the fella's life was chosen arbitrarily, the real star of this tune is the vocoder effect reintroduced on Cher's megahit single "Believe." Listen to the entire record, though, and you'll hear this gimmick on almost all of the rest of the tracks as well. On first run-through, the one-trick-pony-ness of this effect is off-putting, and yet it is the album's one distinctive element. The songs on Europop live up to the album's broad moniker, skimming the basics of tried-and-true dance-pop ("Living in a Bubble," "Now Is Forever"), techno ("Dub in Life," "Another Race"), and acid house ("Europop"). The group even renders a fairly accurate impression of Depeche Mode-style goth-pop ("Your Clown"). But the tracks rarely deviate from a four-on-the-floor thud, numbing the ears to the songs' otherwise distinguishable qualities. The record is too hard to swallow in one bite; its tracks are much tastier as singles, serving well in a club setting as segues to stronger songs by other artists. --Beth Massa

Excellent CD - very fast paced, i was introduced to this group by 'Blue' which (dont get me wrong)is a great track, but there are better ones on the CD. If you like 'blue' there is almost no doubt that you will like the rest of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars PERSONAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR 99   December 8, 1999

WOW! My personal album of the year. NO KIDDING! Even the ever popular #1 smash "Blue" is actually my #3 pick. These other songs are even better: 1)Silicon world 2)Hyperlink 3)another race. I think that anybody who can't dance to there tracks is in serious need of medical attention. Even their slow rave number "your clown" reminds me of "strange love" by Depeche mode. Another mid tempo ambient "now is forever" brings back "the great commandment" by camouflage. Talking about deep lyrics in a dance album, you will find it in "too much of heaven" & "living in a bubble".listen closely. Even their title track "europop" is creatively packaged. you know buying a dance album(or album) you always going for one song and the rest of them is terrible but this album is totally the opposite. Almost everyone of the songs here is so good that you want to open your sunroof & turn it out loud or even jumping around & looking stupid. Great mix, dance album of the year quality, happy tunes; so do yourself a favor : DON'T MISS IT & play it loud at your millinnium party.

5 out of 5 stars WOW....this CD keeps me dancing through the whole thing!   January 29, 2000

I heard "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" on the radio a while back when I was driving home from work and immediately started dancing...well, moving as much as I could while driving. I was like, "Who does this awesome song! " The station didn't tell me. :( Finally on TV this last week I saw a commercial and they played a snippet of Blue and said it was Eiffel 65! I rushed out and bought the CD. I was so pleasantly surprised that all the other songs are just as dance-able as "Blue". The music is sort of silly, but I think that's why I love it so much. I love all the songs..."My Console" is really funny and cool...it's a song about PlayStation and it mentions a couple of my favorite games (Bloody Roar and Gran Turismo). Some of my other favorites are "Move Your Body"...although it's not such an original idea for a song, it's still so cool and definitely one of my favorites to dance to. Europop is cool. Usually I'm disappointed with the song that the artists choose for their album title, but Europop is great! I like "Hyperlink" a lot. It's a silly, but sweet love song. And I'd have to say, even though the whole CD is good (how rare is that!) "Blue" is still my absolute favorite song of theirs. I love the extended mix too. I was nervous about buying this CD since I had only heard one song and hadn't heard of them previously, but believe me, this CD is not disappointing in the least. I just bought it last night and right now I'm listening to it for the third time! You're missing out if you don't have this CD! If you get it, have fun and rock out! I sure can't stop dancing to it! :)

    4 out of 5 stars A breakthrough dance album   January 10, 2000
    DJ Red Delicious (Cali)

"Europop" is an amazing triumph and a disappointment at the same time. I'll start out with the major problems: the lyrics. Like pop music is coming to so much lately, the lyrics on this album are VERY weak. The three guys from Italy seem to have a very light grasp on the English language and culture. This shows in the low point of the album; the song "My Console" is downright embarassing. A song about a playstation? I'm stunned that this song is even on the album. Also, a few of the tracks seem Thrown together with no real effort. However, 70% of this album shows dance music at it's BEST. The beats are inventive and catchy. The song "BLUE" is perhaps the BEST dance song I have ever heard, and I find its rather simple lyrics to set up the tone of the atmosphere EXTREMELY well. Superior tracks include "Blue", "Move Your Body" (a GREAT dance song), "Silicon World", and "Your clown" (with a strikingly 80's feel). All in all, the good points far outweigh the bad, and you will thouroughly enjoy this CD. Remeniscent of Ace of Base, this will prove to be a breakthrough dance CD. If you love "Blue" as much as I do (my fav song of the year so far), this CD will not disappoint you.
