| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com George Strait's first three greatest-hits albums (now made redundant by the four-disc Strait Out of the Box) collected essential examples of contemporary country music. In his finest singles, Strait seemed to resolve, both commercially and artistically, the tensions between hardcore twang and New Country pop. His 2000 best-of set, however, documents Strait's decline. Oh, the radio play has continued unabated--12 of the 15 tracks here made the country Top 10--but emotionally it is a sad and tedious tumble from the Cajun stomp of 1994's "Adalida" and the deliberate self-deceptions of 1996's "I Can Still Make Cheyenne" to pop-rock successes like 1998's catchy but insipid "True." The two new tracks leave the future as anybody's guess: "Murder on Music Row," a duet with Alan Jackson, pledges allegiance to tradition (both in message and execution), but "The Best Day" is devoid of any of the adult ambiguity, previously a Strait staple, that would grant it poignancy. --David Cantwell

Great duet with Alan Jackson March 8, 2000 Brett (Lexington, Kentucky) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
If for no other reason, this is a good CD because of the duet with Alan Jackson called "Murder on Music Row." If you're like me and feel like Nashville systematically snuffed the life out of real country music in the last 10 years, you'll love this song. If you think Shania and Garth are what country music is all about, you won't get the message at all.
A Nice Re-Cap of the mid to late 90's work of George Strait March 12, 2000 Keith S. (Richmond, VA) 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
Now that I have your attention, BUY THIS ALBUM NOW! then come back and finish the review. This is an awesome greatest hits package and the two new songs are a great complement. If you are wondering whatever happened to REAL country music listen to "Murder On Music Row" a great duet with the hottest singers in country music George Strait and Alan Jackson with Lee Ann Womack singing on background vocals. The other new track, which starts this compilation off, "The Best Day" is a great nostalgic piece that brings back great memories of times I spent with my dad. The one thing you will notice with this album is that George Strait has a way of making each song his own and and it seems that he has lived every line that he sings, there is no competetion out there for Mr. Strait as far as I'm concerned and I believe that he is the idol for many singers of the future generation of country music. Greatest Hits albums aren't always the cream of the crop of an artist's catalog, but this one really stands out from the pack compared to other greatest hits compilations in the past. This is a must have for any George Strait collection or any fan of good country music or just plain good music in general. Like I said buy this album and you will not be sorry, it will get many rotations in the cd player over the years.
THE BEST HITS ALBUM EVER! October 27, 2002 CF (Denver, CO, USA **==) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is my favorite cd I own, and the Road Less Traveled cd is #2. My favorite song EVER is "Blue Clear Sky" with the lyrics and the catchy music, I heard it when I was like 8 years old and I actually knew the lyrics to the song!Bob DiPiero has written so many great hit songs, but this one is the best!"True" is another great song! The lyrics again are mastered and the music is terrific! "Best Day" is another Father/Son Song penned by GS and tells about the son's life with fishin'/drivin'/ and gettin' married'. Things I wish I did more often with my far away dad. "Murder On Music Row" is one of the most inspiring song I ever heard. I always said that many country artists have turned to the pop charts and murdered country music on murder row! This song tells how someone committed murder to country music and we're not really sure who did it. This song is a traditional country song with the use of the STEEL GUITAR and the FIDDLE. I love how Strait and Alan Jackson attack this ongoing problem. Leeann Womack does great on the vocals! "Carrying You Love with Me" is a classic! "Adalida" is a upbeat Cajun melody with unforgettable singin' by George. "Lead On" tells a story of how people lead you on, pretending like they love you. "Carried Away" is a great song with unbeattable music! "We Really Shouldn't Be Doing This" shows the Elvis in Strait's voice and a great song also. "I Can Still Make Cheyenne" is a great story of a Rodeo Cowboy who is always gone so his grilfriend is going to leave him but he says he'll leave right now and speed to Wyoming. I like "King Of The Mountain". It has a very classic traditional country sound and is very catchy. "Round About way" is a very underreated song with an uptempo music sound in it. "You Can't Make A Heart Love Somebody" has very memorable lyrics and is a song that contradicts other propasal song by saying 'No' to the 'Will you marry me?' "One Night At a Time" isn't my favorite but has very catchy music and words "Today My World Slipped Away" is okay, definitely not my favorite, I find it too slow but you may enjoy it. These are the reasons why you should by this GREAT CD! It Has Strait's latest hits but sadly doesn't include the #1 hit "I Just Want To Dance with You" Strait will ALWAYS be the all time greatest country KING of country music, who has stayed country throughout his career!
Country Music for True Country Fans April 4, 2000 Steven Fantina (Phillipsburg, NJ USA) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
This CD contains many of George's Straits recent hits, and the past few years have proven to be among the best of his overall strong career. Two new songs are also included. "The Best Day" is an ode to the family relationship told from a loving son to his father. However, the other new cut is unquestionably the collection's most piquant and potentially polemical. "Murder on Music Row" is a traditional sounding jeremiad that decries much, if not most, of what presently passes as country music. Without naming any names, it is pretty obvious to true country fans who the suggested culprits are. Making this allegation even more powerful, the song is a duet with Alan Jackson-another bona fide country singer-and features background vocals by Lee Ann Womack who has also earned that distinction. It should be called, "Attempted Murder on Music Row" because as long as George Strait is still making music, country music will be alive and well. Also when rounding up suspects, they should start by checking for Garth Brooks' fingerprints. Next Shania Twain's alibi should be verified and the authorities may also want to investigate the whereabouts of Faith Hill, Tracy Lawrence, the Dixie Chicks, and some of those other caterwauling crooners who have infiltrated Nashville and have gotten their songs to pollute the airwaves of so called "new country" radio stations. Once those perps are rounded up and the radio starts playing the Branson bunch again, there will no need for songs like that machination anthem that highlights these latest, greatest, and Straitest hits, but George Straits music will always have a welcome place on country radio.
GEORGE IS "KING" AND GEORGE IS "THE MAN" OF COUNTRY MUSIC April 6, 2000 Beth Hewitt (WEST VIRGINIA) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
GEORGE IS "PURE COUNTRY" IN MY BOOK. I HAVE BEEN A STRAIT FAN FOR MANY YEARS. THERE ISN'T A SONG OF HIS THAT I DON'T LIKE. HE IS CALM, COOL, AND MOST OF ALL "COUNTRY" ALL THE WAY. I WENT TO A CONCERT OF HIS IN PITTSBURGH AND HE IS AWESOME! ALL HE HAS TO DO IS WALK OUT ON THAT STAGE AND HIS FANS GO NUTS! I LOVE THE MAN AND ALL OF HIS MUSIC, ESPECIALLY THE DUET WITH ALAN, THIS SONG WILL BE THE DUET OF ALL TIME.
