the "Boyz N The Hood" get soft... April 7, 2004 Zagnorch (Terra, Sol System) 22 out of 23 found this review helpful
Like just about everybody else, I found myself intrigued by this group when I first heard their unusual cover of Eazy E's "Boyz N The Hood" on the local alternative station. And like just about everybody else, I got a pretty good laugh out of their replacing the background music from angry gangsta rap beats `n' scratches with a light-hearted alternative sound. This shocking genre shift, combined with the front man's fairly mellow singing of the angry lyrics, made for one of the most hilariously entertaining cover tunes I've ever experienced. The boys in the `hood might always be hard, but this re-make definitely ain't!But now that they've hooked me, it's time to see if they can reel me in with the rest of the playlist-- which is what they did with flying colors. Having a sound that's somewhat reminiscent of early Weezer and Foo Fighters (two of my fave alternative groups) with a slight touch of Offspring-like humor Hee hee... "Your face looks like Eric Stoltz in `Mask'" (From `Dear Kate')...), these guys take me back to the days when the alternative sound ruled the rock airwaves before that annoying rap-rock claptrap started takin' over. These guys put out a nice mix of happy (`Switcheroo'), angry (`Anyway'), and fun (`WussyPuff') cuts, giving the presentation a nice balance. I especially enjoyed the calmer, piano-backed rendition of `Anyway', which is included as a bonus track in this collection. You're gonna hafta do a fair deal of fast-forwardin' to get to this one, however; 'cuz it's on track 42 following a bunch of mostly blank tracks. Also included as a bonus bit is a two-minute-long laughing jag that's kinda creepy to listen to. This piece Definitely ain't somethin' ya wanna take yer ear to whilst tryin' to come down off a psychedelic trip... `Late
Get it for "Anyway" April 1, 2005 Human 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Ok, I'll be honest. I don't really own this album. But I did download most of the tracks from it and listened to them. I wasn't expecting much, since I haven't heard anything from these guys from the late 90's, but there are some good songs on Superfast, and a few incredible ones. Their song "Anyway" is easily the best on the album. It's been a while since I've heard a song that completely hooked me, and that's what "Anyway" did. It should have been a hit long before the now cliched "Boyz-in-da-hood." I really think Dynamite Hack never really got their shot since their number one single was a cutesy rap cover. I know I wrote them off as soon as I heard it. But they're talented, and have a some pretty heavy songs. The next time I go to the used music store, I'm going to look for a cheap copy of Superfast. There's also a great piano/female version of "Anyway" that's hidden on the album. It's a beautiful song, and the woman singing it has a very good voice. She doesn't try too hard, and her voice is very sexy. I'd like to find out who she is. The point of this review is to give these guys a chance. I never did, and now I regret it.
Sounds like...? May 26, 2000 Brendan (Annapolis md) 33 out of 42 found this review helpful
I bought this cd for the remake of Boyz-N-the-Hood. its a great song and the soft acoustic guitar sound is fantastic. the rest of their songs use electric guitars and are a bit louder. there are some other great songs on the cd like "switcheroo", "dear kate", and track #42 ("anyway"). some of the other songs are subpar. if you like boyz-n-the-hood enough to listen to it over and over, i recommend buying the cd. and take a chance on listening to the other songs which will become their follow up hits.
OH... MY... GAWD! July 16, 2000 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
The first time I heard "Boyz in the Hood", I was laughing so hard, I was almost in tears...that song is hysterical! Anyways, I went out and bought the album, (something I usually don't do when I only know one song on it) and I just let it play. This is one of the best albums I own, track #33 is awesome, and you've just gotta hear it! These guys are awesome, I saw them live in concert at Saint Andrews hall, they are so friendly, and willing to meet the fans (they signed my CD) they put on an awesome show, the audience gets really into it, and at the end of boyz in the hood, they sang Eminems Real Slim Shady song to that same soft acoustic sound, it was a riot, these guys ROCK!
Get on this early! May 24, 2000 Austin Milbarge (Cedar Park, TX) 14 out of 18 found this review helpful
Here's a golden opportunity for fans of alternative music to look terribly intelligent to their friends...recommend Dynamite Hack's "Superfast" now, before it becomes the hot CD this summer.OK, everyone digs the "Boyz in the Hood" cover. It's everything else that seals the deal: songs like "Dear Kate", "Switcheroo", and "Anyway" are all songs that grab your attention at first listen and find permanent residence in your head by listen #30. They are loud enough to be cool, and the lyrics are funny enough to memorize. In a couple of weeks or months, Dynamite Hack will be big time and the chance to be a musical sage will be lost. Why wait? This is the summer CD this year and it's already getting hot out!
