Throughout the 1990s, Snoop Dogg proved that the phrase "old rappers" doesn't have to be an oxymoron, and that it's possible to age gracefully within the genre. But as he made the transition from lethargic gangsta crony to mature thug uncle, Snoop the icon soon outstripped Snoop the rapper and his output became spotty, leaving questions of whether his talented tongue was lost to time. On Tha Last Meal, Snoop proves that all the glitter isn't gone from his golden throat. He's so secure that he even dips into crooning on the so fresh and so clean "Leave Me Alone." But Tha Last Meal largely achieves its smoothness through worn-leather raps delivered with pimp savoir-faire and production--supplied by Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Meech Wells, and others--that swaps the charisma-free bounce of Snoop's last two albums for an uptempo, newly enthused sound. The glee is echoed in Snoop's rhymes. "I'm in a three-piece suit looking too cute," Snoop gloats on "Stacey Adams." "Go Away" serves as the Dogg's new position statement, on which he belligerently proclaims "I'm too young to retire, I'm having fun with it / See, when you learn what to do with it, I'll be done with it." Indeed, it'll take a nation of haters to keep Snoop down, something that Snoop nods to on "True Lies," which features the boldest player of all, President Bill Clinton. With even the prez doing dirt, it's clear the game still isn't to be told. --Jon Caramanica

5 out of 5 stars Best Since Doggystyle!   December 22, 2000
14 out of 17 found this review helpful

Well for all those wondering which Snoop album to get between 'Tha Last Meal' and 'Dead Man Walkin', the answer is easy: Tha Last Meal. Snoop shows us on this album that he still has some of the magic he had 7 years back. My only real complaint about this album is that the following people weren't on it: Xzibit, Daz, Kurpt, Warren G, etc... If those guys we're on the album, it might have been as good as Doggystyle! My Favorite songs on tha album are: Hennessey & Buddah, Snoop Dogg, True Lies, Go Away, Set it Off, Lay Low, Issues, Brake Fluid, Ready 2 Ryde, and Y'all Gone Miss Me. To keep this review as short as possible i'll put it this way. This album is a little different then Doggystyle and his past albums, it has less party tracks and its more serious... If your a Snoop fan, you need to check out the album. Now for all those wondering if this is Snoop's BEST album, now that is totally up to you! Doggystyle is less-serious, and more about partying. Tha Last Meal is quite a bit more serious. Right now, i think they are pretty much equal cuz i feel BOTH of the styles... just buy the damn thing.

BTW, Snoop fans: you might think the album is wack for the first 2-3 listens(due to the fact that its different then his albums before) but after that you listen to it a couple times you realize its a really tight album.. its the type of album that you appreciate more and more after every listen!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful album; Snoop's best since Death Row days.   December 31, 2000

Snoop made a remarkable effort on this album. This album really shows how Snoop has brought soul back into his music. Top Dogg was also a great album, but here Snoop becomes even more mature and interesting to hear. He also brings back memories of his more playful-sounding days. It has the same sunshine-laced beats we missed in a good amount of his No Limit Records music. In my opinion Snoop worked with one of rap's most horrible label's, No Limit, and still managed to bring us some good West Coast flavored music! Dr. Dre's 2001 was disappointing in beats and lyrics, so it's good to see Dr. Dre come back with some nice beats. The only thing you really can criticize about this album is that there are no appearances by Warren G, Kurupt (who only talks at the end of one track), Xzibit or Daz Dillinger. Also, I think Kokane, former Ruthless rapper/singer, is on the album way too much (about eight tracks). Don't get me wrong, I like him too, but there should be a limit. And tracks like "Sunshine", "No Backtracking" featuring George Clinton and Brides Of Funkenstein were left off the album. But I'm just happy Snoop made another great album! Production comes from Dr. Dre, Meech Wells, Jelly Roll, and of course Battlecat. The production on the album is great and brings back the greatness of Snoop's raps. Also, The Eastsidaz, Kokane, Bad Azz, Nate Dogg, Suga Free, Lady Of Rage, Ice Cube, MC Ren, Eve, and many more make appearances on here, adding to the flavor. Also, Snoop gets even with Death Row Records and Suge Knight, we'll get to that later.

The album opens with a Doggystyle-like introduction, and moves into the first track, "Compose Myself". This track has Kokane doing a hook and Dr. Dre producing it. Snoop totally tears this track up with a blowout performance. "Snoop Dogg (What's My Name Part II)" follows, and is the album's first single, you've probably heard it. It actually gives a nice Bay Area and LBC flavor to it. It's laid-back, and a catchy track, though it isn't on the level of the original. "True Lies" is a classic track produced by Dr. Dre, some of the instruments used on here are mind-blowing. Snoop also gives a nice feel to this track, and Kokane sings the hook nicely. "Wrong Idea" has a nice beat reminiscent of Bad Azz's track with Daz "I Don't Want To Die" stabbing Death Row Records, which will be on Bad's album in January. Ironically enough Bad Azz is featured on the track, and puts in a nice verse, but Snoop steals the show with a really good verse. "Go Away" is a diss to Death Row by Snoop and Kokane, where Snoop talks about how they keep trying to diss him but fail. He hits them pretty hard here, the beat is tight, but the track drags out a little bit. "Set It Off" features Ice Cube, MC Ren, Lady Of Rage and Nate Dogg, produced by Timbaland of all people! But his beat is good and sounds like The D.O.C.'s "Funky Enough". MC Ren puts in a nice verse, Cube is on the hook, Lady Of Rage comes out of nowhere with a good verse, and Nate Dogg's part is hilarious! Snoop also steals the show with a great two verses! "Stacy Adams" is a classic track, it's laid-back and has a party sort of feel, and one of the greatest hooks! Snoop puts in a great performance. "Lay Low" is a huge diss to Death Row Records from Snoop, Butch Cassidy, Tray D, Goldie Loc, Nate Dogg, and others. The beat is great produced by Dre. They rip into Suge, Swoop G, Lil' C-Style, and other Death Row people with some hard diss lines! Tray D references to Suge as well, showing The Eastsidaz can stand up to The Row, Master P even sounds good on this track! I almost didn't even recognize him at first! "Everywhere I Go" is also a diss to Death Row Records, called "Issues" here for some reason. The track has a great beat by Meech Wells, and Snoop talks about how Death Row is hating from his views and when they crossed out his name in the issue of The Source magazine on their promotion. "Brake Fluid" is a great sex track and is hilarious, the beat is funny as well. Just a great song. "Ready To Ride" features Eve, and Snoop and her sound good together over a nice piano-laced track. "In Love At Times (Losing Control)" is a classic track featuring Butch Cassidy and Soopafly! This has a classic LBC sound to it, and Soopafly and Snoop show they are a great duo. The beat is bright and the song is about bad girls. On "Leave Me Alone", Snoop actually sings, over a Bay Area-like beat, and it's good for cruising. "You'll Miss Me (Raindrops)" is also a great song, and ends the album out nicely. The beat is more laid-back and slow and the chorus is good.

There is only one track I seriously hope you avoid on this album. It is "Back Up Off Me", which features Master P and Magic. The song is terrible, I'm just disgusted with this song. But everything else is tight! So I recommend this nice Snoop album. Five stars!

1 out of 5 stars What an awful CD   May 24, 2001

I'm a diehard rap fan (and used to love Snoop) but the guy has completely fallen off. Imagine if this was his first CD instead of Doggystyle-- we wouldn't even have heard of him! Unlike Tupac Shakur who got stronger lyrically and sylistically on each CD, Snoop has gotten worse and worse. I wish I had the money back I spent on this unlistenable horse excrement.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible album, OVERHYPED TRASH   February 14, 2001

Don't buy this CD, I listened to it and it's wack. Snoop is trying so hard to be a thug, but it doesn't come through. The production is wack and his flows are tired. Give up snoop. ...

5 out of 5 stars Snoop Snoop Snoop Snoop Snoop   May 29, 2001

...Start out with a sample from something but i cant put my finger on it but its a nice way to start the album. Then Hennessey and Buddah is an excellent song! Snoop flows to the beat in his sleep obviously. Nice sound effects too. "Snoop Dogg" has production by Beat master Timbaland. Thizzle izzle tizzle. also has a memorable chorus. Good lyrics for this song. True Lies has a cameo appearance by Big... Bill Clinton himself. Great beat on this here and pretty good lyrics and another good chorus. Wrong Idea has another phenomenal beat courtesy of Jelly Roll. With tight verses from Bad Azz and Snoop. Go Away has Snoop flowing effortlessly over a Meech Wells tune. Set it Off had to grow on me though and it is a sorta weak song compared to the others but it is alright. Nate Dogg puts in a classic verse and Lady of Rage emerges from the shadows. Stacey Adams is the best doggone song on the album. its so laid back and almost dreamy. One of the best songs of its kind for sure. A Snoop Classic song. Chorus is genius. Lay Low is the song that takes the most direct stabs at DEath Row Records and CEO Suge Knight. Everyone shines on this even Master P but the Eastsidaz is the hardest. "Where that busta that be popping his lips...... Tray Dee(from video version) because the regular is too censored. Incredible beat and Lyrics. Bring it on is a pretty raw song too with a nice verse by Suga Free. the skit makes no sense. Issues is another stab at Death Row. Meech Wells comes thru again behind the scenes and once again Snoop went to sleep with the beat. Flow cant be touched. Brake Fluid is yet another song feat. Kokane and he is close to wearing out his welcome although he does bless the chorus. I dont really care for this beat though or the song in general. Ready to Ride is more of an uptempo song and Eve and Snoop absoulutely murder the beat with little effort. Chorus is memorable. Loosen Control slows it down and Butch Cassidy kills the chorus. It has such a summertime feel to it and is one of the best songs on the album. I cant swim isnt good. They shouldve tied this to 5 tons and dropped it in the lake. Leave me alone has Snoop singing! THis song actually sounds a little like "Didnt mean to Turn You on" by 2nd II None off the Above the Rim Soundtrack. Has a good beat to it. Back up off me is the Worst song on the album as soon as it comes on its wack. This sounds way out of place but i guess Master P had to put in his one No Limit track since he is supplying the funds. Yall gone miss me ends the album perfectly. people sayin snoop aint nothin, i hate snoop, snoop is a b.... but as soon as he retires theyll want em back and thats basically what this is about.

THe production on the album is top notch and the album flows so nice. Extremely cohesive. Snoops lyrics are on point as always makin this a must have in ya collection especially if you even slightly like snoop.
