Pearl Jam Rocks!

Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. I apologize to anyone who went to this show and loved it, but when you sit and listen to this bootleg, this is not a performance to be proud of. Understandably, this was the very first show in Pearl Jam's massive 2000 world tour, and they are really rusty tonight. Despite a few winners like "Red Mosquito" and "Black," the boys are really off their game tonight. In a show full of musical errors, the low point is a disastrous "Faithful" where the band barely manages to stumble through to the end. To add salt to the wound, there is also technical trouble, as Matt Cameron's rig breaks down sometime in "Faithful." While repairs are being made, the band goes ahead and plays "Untitled" and part of "Last Kiss" without the drums, as the crowd claps along. This is still a very enjoyable bootleg, however, because of the ecstatic Portuguese audience. The crowd sings along to every single word, in English, and acts as a giant human teleprompter when Eddie Vedder forgets big chunks of lyrics in "Wishlist" and "Immortality." In between songs, the crowd often breaks spontaneously into the chorus of whatever song was just played, or fills the time with glorious soccer-style chants. For diehard PJ-fans, you may still like this bootleg just for the audience, which almost puts on a better show than the band.

When I first discovered that Pearl Jam decided to release every show of their Binaural tour in 2000 I was initially skeptical of their intentions. I thought it was just another way for them to attarct attention in order to raise their diminished public profile and dwindiling record sales. While the cardboard sleeves these albums are packaged in are not exactly glamourous and actually cause damage to the discs after a while the musical contents of these bootlegs can be a potent reminder of why Pearl Jam, even on an off night, is one of the most thrilling and mercurial live bands of the last twenty years. This paticular show is their first of the tour and of the series and while you can definitely find more musically proficent ones it is a still a good introduction to their no overdubs, warts and all approach to live albubs. A good example of this is found in Faithful when, in the middle of the song, Matt Cameron's drums fall to the ground (the band continues and finishes the song, believe it or not.) Moments such as these are one reason for fans of the band to look into these albums as much as listening to the band tear into Animal and Red Mosquito. After the "technical difficulties" of the drums are sorted out during Last Kiss the show flows pretty well until Immortality when Ed forgets the words to Immortality (get used to this, he does this almost everytime this song is played during the tour.) Also, the band struggle to find their feet on Alive (another difficult song for them on this leg of the tour.) The band finish on a high note with their perennial closer, Yellow Ledbetter. All and all, a good introduction to what will prove to be a stellar series of shows to come.

Recently, I really got into the music of Pearl Jam. I acquired their studio albums, and all that remains is the live stuff. So I decided to take on a massive undertaking and get all 72 bootlegs.

The first show in Lisbon is not bad for opening night. While the band is far from their top form, they show a lot of promise in this first bootleg. The opener, "Of The Girl," is fabulous, and the band shows a lot of energy on "Do The Evolution," "Animal," "Red Mosquito," and other tracks on the first disc. Technical problems disrupt the momentum of the show, but there are several good performances to be found on the second disc as well. "Thin Air" is good, "Alive" is wonderful, and so is "Yellow Ledbetter." The band makes good on some of their mistakes as well; "Faithful" is not without its problems, but it sounds just fine. Not that the band isn't off on a few tunes; "Daughter" sounds rushed, "Evacuation" sounds just as bad live as it does on the album, and Eddie Vedder flubs portions of "Wishlist" and "Immortality." But overall, the show isn't bad for the first night, thought there's undoubtedly better shows to come.
