Amazon.com Like Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera never met a melissmatic phrase (that gospel-like elongation of syllables) that she couldn't love. And she deploys more than her share throughout this 11-song holiday disc. Her excessive style is best-suited to "Merry Christmas, Baby"--complete with a surprise cameo by Dr. John. When she isn't blowing out her chords with embarrassing emoting, at times, Aguilera sounds like she's shouting. Still, you know that if you don't get this for your teenaged fan, it's you who will get that lump of coal in your stocking. --Martin Keller

Christina Calm Down! December 19, 2000 23 out of 27 found this review helpful
The most gifted singer to come along in a long time is obviously Christina Aguilera. She ahs proven she can sing anything with that powerful belt. On her Christmas CD she chooses christmas favorites and a few original songs. Her rendition of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas will blow everyone away. Other highlight include The Christmas Song and This Christmas. One thing she needs to do is calm down a bit. Her version of O Holy Night is a vocal rollercoaster which easily could have been the highlight of this album, but she feels the need to prove that she really can sing. She already has and I'm sure alot of people would agree with me when I say she should just hit the high note and hold it, that would send shivers up and down my spine. To me it is not appropriate to do vocal acrobatics on standard Christmas songs, but she has an amazing voice and she sings her heart out. I just wish she would calm down.
What a disappointment! October 27, 2000 17 out of 25 found this review helpful
I was so excited when I heard Christina Aguilera was releasing a Christmas CD! I own her debut album, and I was impressed with her singing abilities, so I decided to try her Christmas CD. I looked at the track listing on this site, where I purchased the CD, and it looked quite promising, so I purchased it. The disapointment began when I realized the tracks posted do not match up to those on the actual CD (for example, I was expecting "Silent Night," because it was listed on the website, but somehow is not on the CD itself.) I decided to listen to it anyway, and was shocked to hear how much pop was incorperated into the traditional Christmas carols! As a teenager, I do like pop in certain contexts, but Christmas carols such as "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" are not not, in my opinion, an appropriate context. I believe this could have been a much better CD, given Ms. Aguilera's obvious talent, and it was a sore disappointment to me. My advice: save your money. It's not worth it.
Doesn't really sound like a CHRISTMAS album November 13, 2000 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
Much as I really adore Christina Aguilera's startling vocal abilities, I have to comment that this christmas album of hers doesn't cut it as one to instil holiday spirit. Her voice, indeed, is greater than ever. She sings with better control and more elaborate stylisations - but at times she overdoes it, gorging an entire track with the maximum amount of her vocal callisthenics possible. Jazz appears to be Aguilera's best platform for displaying that talent of hers to best effect - hear "Merry Xmas Baby". However, amid the impressive melismatic curls, where is the tenderness in her music, voice? The uptempo tracks are best guilty of the latter flaw - Arresting in the audio makeup, but nevertheless overproduced and devoid of the simplicity best rendered in christmas songs. (Track 11, "Christina's Xmas", a meaningless, hip hop interlude that does no good to the album at all.) This 11-track album will be remembered for the vocal showmanship, but for the holiday spirit, there are better CDs out there.
Soulful: Christina's Kind of Christmas October 31, 2000 16 out of 24 found this review helpful
Christina Aguilera has generated more buzz than her teen-pop peers since winning the 'Best New Artist' Grammy and releasing an ambitious set of Spanish language music. With the release of her first holiday album, the little blonde with the big voice proves herself to be an all-out soul sister. "My Kind of Christmas" puts soulful twists on such standards as "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "The Christmas Song." While a gospel-tinged "O Holy Night" is a showstopper by virtue of Aguilera's always-powerful voice, she shines the best on secular tunes such as Donny Hathaway's classic "This Christmas" and her duet with Dr. John, "Merry Xmas Baby." With a couple of original r&b flavored tunes in the mix, Christina Aguilera's holiday offering is perfect for soul and gospel lovers looking for something a bit new (Aguilera has grown considerably as a vocalist since her debut a year ago) or of course for your teen-idol obsessesed adolescent. In blowing away the competition with her confident vocal style and maturing artistically, Christina Aguilera appeals to both camps. Put a little shot of soul in your CD collection-this one is worth it!
Not my kind of Christmas November 29, 2000 15 out of 18 found this review helpful
I've been very impressed with Ms. Aguilera's vocal talents since I first heard them on The Mickey Mouse Club years ago, however this CD is ridiculously overdone. While I am all for artists making song their own, this just seems a way for her and her producers to show off vocal talents while butchering classic Christmas songs. After listening to the first five tracks in complete disapointment I had hoped Oh Holy Night would be of some quality. The beginning was lovely. Using her wondrous voice to accent this songs wonderful writing. Then ruining this beautifully haunting piece with what seems to be becomming her trademark 5 million unneccesary vocal slides. Hopefully she will grow out of this need as Mariah Carey has seemed to do since her first three Albums or so. Bottom line is I would return this CD if the store would let me.
