Brilliant.... March 22, 2001 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Mandalay combines several styles, all of which revolve around moody, haughty, almost trance-like themes. Mandalay is the work of Nicola Hitchcock and Saul Freeman. Nicola's voice, in my opinion, is what sets Mandalay apart from the crowd. Both fragile and powerful, her singing evokes the sort of emotive response that reminds you why you listen to music in the first place. Nicola's vocal talents are perfectly complemented by Saul's music. To borrow a quote from their website, Mandalay's music is "...weathered yet pristine...set to complex instrumental hues, yet instantly accessible."
If you are the sort of music-lover that has moved beyond Top-40, this one is definitely worth your time. Mysterious, atmospheric chill-out music! December 5, 2000 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I began to hunt for Mandalay albums when I heard one of their songs in one of Cafe del Mar CD's ("Beautiful") and also when I heard them again in "The Next Best Thing" OST ("This Life"). Nicola Hitchcock's breathy, sensual voice combined with the chill-out atmospheric music has really captured me! After the party has wound down to a number of close friends and you need to relax and have good conversations without dampening the spirit, Mandalay would really flavour the atmosphere with their tasty beat and vocal arrangement. After a heavy day at work, it's also great just to close my eyes and listen to "Like Her", "No Reality" or "You Forget". Mandalay is simply one of UK's hidden gems!
Simply breath-taking April 7, 2001 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I found a copy of the "Solace" compilation which includes tracks off "Instinct" in the used cd bins where I shop and less than two weeks before it was going to be officially released. Remembering how much I liked the song "This Life" from "The Next Best Thing" soundtrack, I immediately rescued this cd from the used bins. It didn't take me long to become infatuated with Mandalay and their intricate melodies. "Beautiful" just took my breath away and almost made me weep. I haven't heard anything as gorgeous as "Beautiful", and "Deep Love". Nicola Hitchcock's fragile voice reminded me of Saint Etienne's Sarah Cracknell and Solar Twins's Joanna Stevens at times. I hope to see more from this duo in the future.
Vomitorious! February 6, 2001 1 out of 15 found this review helpful
Tori Amos after a massive stroke backed by a toddler on a RadioShack keyboard! Well, not THAT bad, but close enough.
Wonderful! December 2, 2000 If you have been looking for something a little different and you like Olive & Cocteau Twins then here is what you have been looking for! A bit more formed than the Cocteau Twins and not quite as dance oriented as Olive. Suttle strings tip toe in from behind you until you are completly surrounded by beautiful soundscapes and crafted music. Don't miss this one.
