4 out of 5 stars Amazing CD, not-so-amazing bonus track   May 13, 2003

If you're reading this review, chances are you already know that Orchid is an amazing album. You probably even own a copy already, and just want to know if it is worth the extra money to have the one bonus track that is on this reissue. The answer, sadly, is no. The bonus track, Into the Frost of Winter, is a basically a poor quality demo recording of a song that was later incorporated into the Morningrise album. It really doesn't add anything to the album. In fact, it almost takes away from the brilliant work that is Orchid. If I were to review the regular edition of the album I would give it 5 stars easily. Because of the poor quality of the bonus track, and the high price of the reissue, I am rating this edition at 4 stars. I would recommend it only to those people (like me) who are completists and have to own every single Opeth song.

5 out of 5 stars The Beginning of A Legacy   July 17, 2003

Before I say anything, let me admit that I dont actually own this album; I burned it, so therefore I have not heard the bonus track. However, I am completely in love with every song on it, and I plan to purchase it, along with the rest of their albums which I either have burned or have already bought. Now, that that is out of the way, THIS ALBUM IS SHEER BRILLIANCE! Nothing short of genius. It all starts off with In The Mist She Was Standing, which, to be quite honest, with its use of wonderful melodies and harmonies and intricate guitar work, is my favorite song on this album. Next is Under The Weeping Moon. Great track with many acousic riffs. Kind of mysterious. After that is a track that proves that the piano is not just a classical instrument. Sillhouette is a great piano piece that absolutely sends chills down my spine to hear. Next up, Forest Of October. Another great song which has a wonderful, flowing intro. Track 5 is The Twilight Is My Robe, a wonderful song. Then comes Requiem, an awesome little instrumental (two guitars and a bass) that leaves you wanting more. The Apostle In Triumph gives you just that. It has a short intro that fades out and then out of nowhere the music starts again. The song is mostly acoustic and has a cool keyboard interlude towards the end. All in all, one of my favorite albums. Opeth is one of the best metal bands of all time, no question, and they deserve their own genre, for it pains me to see them lumped into the same general category (death metal) as bands like Cannibal Corpse and Dying Fetus.

4 out of 5 stars very good   April 3, 2001

i liked this album very much. The bonus track didn't really add much in my opinion but the album is still solid. I think their most recent, more progressive stuff is better.

    This album is beautiful :)

The bonus-track might not be the best, but it is fun to listen to. All in all, this is an extremely great album. Go get it =)

5 out of 5 stars Good One   September 18, 2002

This is an awesome album to own. The extra track is definitely cool and a great bonus. I really enjoyed having the extra track because it had a riff or two from the song Advent, which is on their second album Morningrise. None the less, this is one of my favorite albums of all time(with or without the bonus song).
