Challenging Yet Rewarding October 27, 2000

Tapestry: New Music From the Americas is a well-chosen title for an exceptional new recording. Each of the works contained on this compact disc were newly commissioned for an ensemble-clarinet, violin, and double bass-inspired by one of the great chamber works of the 20th century, Stravinsky's L'histoire du soldat. The composers who contributed to this project, including Matthew Nicholl, Yehuda Yannay, Mario Lavista, Leonardo Velazquez, Pablo Ortiz, and Patricia Repar, represent the Americas: Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The performers recorded here are all exceptional; of special note is the clarinetist Frankie Kelly, whose sumptuous tone and impeccable phrasing make her one of the young virtuosos on this instrument. The result is a recording with an international feel, born from the close collaboration of some of the finest musicians in the Americas today.

Since the release of this CD, portions have been played in Germany, Rumania, Russia, throughout the United States, and most recently in Israel. The listeners at large are especially responding to three of the works featured whose titles are "Five Pieces for Three Players", "Diasporan Dances", and "Loose Connections". In the case of the latter two, I encourage violinists, bassists, and clarinetists to peruse the listening samples provided. These works are challenging, exciting, and indicative of the abundance of creative energy that exists among composers in North America. A critical review will be available by the end of July 2003 through the Online Clarinet Resource website. Tapestry: New Music from the Americas--a wise investment in contemporary chamber music....... ("Loose Connections" was selected as winner of a chamber music score competition in San Francisco only last year and was performed by members of a contemporary chamber players group).
