5 out of 5 stars The first capture of the master of the guitar himself   March 30, 2005

Are You Experienced? (1967.), Jimi Hendrix's first studio album

'Are You Experienced' is the first album capture of the legend on the guitar himself. What Jimi Hendrix achieved in the 3 or so years at the top in the world of music before his all too tragic death in 1970 is truly phenominal. No-one has ever been able to play the guitar quite like Jimi Hendrix and you see it in this album all too plainly. You could literally take away Hendrix's vocals in his songs and just listen to his playing and you would still hear the song words - the sound he produces from his guitar is like a voice speaking to you - thats how good his playing was! 'Are You Experienced' is fast approaching being 40 years old in the next couple of years and it still hasn't and will never lose its appeal. This album is listened to across generations alike and I'm sure that will be the case for years to come - this is what has made so many people over the years pick up the guitar and learn to play. Hendrix's music is so influencial.

So, that's Hendrix, if you didn't probably know so already but the band he played in was the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Hendrix after not really enjoying too much success in the US in his really early years came to Britain and it was here he was discovered and really made his name. The two men who played with him in his band must not be overlooked. Mitch Mitchell was a more than capable drummer and Noel Redding, who sadly died a couple of years ago was an excellent bassist who provided the grounding for Hendrix to exert his brillaince. 'Are You Experienced' was the group's initial effort and it truly stands as one of the greatest debuts of all time as well as one of the greatest rock albums AND plenty of fans of Jimi Hendrix rate this one, along with Electric Ladyland as his best. The album contains the perfect fusion of styles. Jimi and his band give us a great dose of psychedelia in parts and then some real bluesy tunes also. Theres some good riffs in parts as well as some very catchy tunes and most of all, you hear the guitar played in a truly unique light.

Two issues of this classic album are available, a US edition which has a mustard coloured background with the band pictured in a circle in the centre and a UK edition which has a dark background with Jimi pictured in the centre with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell pictured to his left and right. DO NOT WORRY if you get either one of the editions as they both contain the same 17 amazing tracks but they are just arranged in a different order.

Highlights of the album??? Well maybe the whole thing is the fairest reflection! It is a real 60 minute treat. Hits 'Purple Haze' with its famous opening guitar sequence and 'Hey Joe' the slower paced, passionate rambler are both featured. 'Third Stone From the Sun' is my favourite track - this is 6 minutes of serious psychedelia, with some weird and thoughtful sections to it with another classic guitar sequence which you will have been bound to have heard before. 'Red House' will give you a taste of the blues and 'Manic Depression' has a great drum rolling style to it with some good lyrics. 'Foxey Lady' is another classic and don't forget 'Fire', for me one of the catchier tunes on the album with some more killer guitar work. 'Highway Chile' is brilliant, the guitar playing literally screams and leaps out at you when you hear it. 'Wind Cries Mary' calls the album home further with its amazing atmospheric style - the best lyrics on the album are in this one, for me anyway - this track has been covered by many artists over the years.

Hendrix made the guitar great and this album is a prime example. The Experience were a great trio of musicians overall and you see this clearly with this debut effort. This is personally one of my favourite albums in my collection and in my opinion should never be overlooked - it is way, way too good to be missed out on.

This CD is definetly worth buying. Hendrix's guitar playing and vocals just blew me away. The sad thing is though, is that he plays better than most modern music!! if you have heard some of todays rock like st.anger and hoobastank or midtown, but hendrix just blows them away. Definitly buy this awesome music

Finally the closest reproduction of the original album that take us into the sonic mayhem/paradise of the Jimi Hendrix Experience thirty years ago! This deluxe mini-LP style album restored the original song order & cover arts on this ground-breaking disk as it debuted in Europe on May 12, 1967! The remastered sound on the disk reveals clearly the perfectly tight/raw musicial interaction in the group: the frantic furies of Mitch's chops, Noel's pumping basslines, and Jimi's intense guitar work. This edition also faithfully reproduced the LP feel in the form of double-sided sleeves (great snap shots at Jimi, Noel, Mitch) && protective plastic disk casing. The $$ is worth it, friends..Indeed an excellent item for the collector and/or music lover!

**Worthy to note for those who read Japanese, there is a handy information booklet that discusses this project and introduced each member of this exciting trio!

~~@@a funny little side-story of mine: in my situation, my album was badly scratched and damaged (burnt?..j/k) during my many Experience jam sessions..boy, the music just makes the normal human go so crazy! ..glad i didn't have a guitar with me back then..heehee, therefore, I purchase this edition for replacement and definately this is the keeper, baby! I never looked back since..=-)

You need to be Experienced, ~always~~
