A Punishing Performance in Motown November 1, 2001 doomsdayer520 (Pennsylvania) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. Pearl Jam got off to a rather slow start with the third leg of the 2000 world tour, with a couple of below-average shows in Montreal and Toronto. But then they hit Detroit and kicked off a string of four spectacular shows in a row, continuing to East Troy, WI then Chicago and St. Louis. This gig in Detroit is rather short, but the performance is one of the most relentless and punishing of the entire tour, and there are many surprises in the set list. The fact that this show begins with the barnstormer "Go" should tell you something, especially since the band usually preferred to open shows with quiet numbers to build the tension. "State of Love and Trust" and "Tremor Christ" appear very effectively early in the set, and the band delivers extra slamming renditions of the heavy rockers "Animal," "Even Flow," and a rare "Spin the Black Circle." Some other surprises include a majestic "I Got S**t" and "In My Tree," in which Matt Cameron truly earns his keep as the latest of PJ's many "temporary" drummers (hope he becomes permanent). The dramatic "Parting Ways" closes the second set, leaving the crowd oohing and ahhing before the band pulls out a surprise show closer in Neil Young's "F***in' Up." Also, watch for Eddie Vedder's heartfelt apology for screwing up "Nothing As It Seems." This guy knows how to work a crowd.
Detroit loves Pearl Jam and Pearl Jam loves Detroit March 30, 2001 Shawn Chittle (New York, NY USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
For some reason, unknown to me at this time, Pearl Jam rocks extra hard in Detroit. The phrase "Detroit Rock City" is very appropriate whenever they come to town. Some extra energy is mustered or something must be on their minds as they hit the stage, for twice now I have seen them just tear Detroit up and its a feat to behold. The venue (Palace of Auburn Hills) in Detroit is no more or no less a venue as compared to any major arena, but somehow that crowd, or the sound, or the vibe those shows provide really feed a lot into the band, and, as with the 1998 Yield tour, a 19 song set with 6 song encore is a feat of rock brilliance. Although the "mullet" cutting of a roadie's hair from the Yield tour could never be topped, the fellas prove the music it what really matters. Detroit, somehow, is a better place when Pearl Jam visits, and thier shows will go down as, by far, some of the best rock concerts the city has ever seen. Listen to the "Encore Break" track and the sheer volume and intensity of the crowd will send chills down your spine. This recording captures that essence. If faced with the many choices from the 2000 tour, Detroit must be chosen as one of, if not the best, show of the tour.
Eddie and the Boys rock the hell out of Detroit April 3, 2001 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was lucky enough to attend this show (my FIRST PJ concert EVER)up in Auburn Hills. I had to buy the bootleg to mark the occasion. Make no mistake, this concert ranks in the top 5 of all US shows. And the back cover bares the man/ape symbol, signifying that this was one of the bands favorite shows. It can be argued that there is no favorites like Alive, Black, Yellow Ledbetter and so on, but if you are a true Pearl Jam fan...like myself...you will overlook that fact and enjoy some live 'rarities' like 'Tremor Christ' and a fabulously played 'In My Tree'(a great song from a highly under-rated album). Also, a real gem is the live debut of the full band playing 'Parting Way'. You can hear and 'feel' the energy that Pearl Jam infused into the crowd that night throughout the 2 cd's, especially with songslike 'SmallTown', 'Betterman', 'Daughter', 'Jeremy', 'Crazy Mary'and as was mentioned, the encore break. One highlight on the second cd is during 'Nothing As It Seems' where Eddie messes up the lyrics. :) It's pretty funny, especially when Ed admits what he did. When I was at the show I couldn't really hear much of what was being said between songs. Now that I have this concert I can now understand the chatter that Eddie was doing. And I would like to say, thank YOU Pearl Jam! Don't overlook this cd because you don't see 'Yellow Ledbetter' anywhere. This is a must own bootleg of the band distinguished (at least by me) as being the best live act ever.
Outstanding!!! A must-have! July 22, 2001 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was lucky enough to be in the front row at this show, so of course I had to get the cd to commemorate the occasion. I agree with the review below that this is the best "SOLAT" of the tour, and also one of the best "RVM" I've ever heard anywhere. Also a few funny moments between songs, like the "Esther sign" and the apology for the screw up during "Nothing As It Seems." The energy at this show was intense, and the crowd was one of the best of the many PJ shows I've been to (thanks to everyone there for a great night!). If you're only going to buy a few of the live cds, by all means put this one on your list. Also recommended: Chicago, Seattle 2, Milan, Ljublana, Jones 3, Boston 2, and Vegas.
