4 out of 5 stars short but sweet concert   April 17, 2001

I bought this album because (1) I was at the cold, miserable show at Sac Valley Ampitheater and (2) the version of "The Kids Are Alright" was one I'd never heard before from them, except at the show, fast and more true to the Who version, very very good. It is shorter than many of the other concerts, but a gem in its own right. The appearances of "Whipping," "Last Exit" and "Tremor Christ" are wonderful, welcome additions to their more recent shows, and "State of Love and Trust" is one of the most heartfelt I've ever heard, Vedder singing to a different melody, dragging out the long notes. "Last Kiss" is also great. So- if these are some of your favorite songs, as they are mine, you'll greatly enjoy this album.

3 out of 5 stars The California You Don't See in the Movies   November 26, 2001

Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. In the 2000 bootleg series, the other shows in the state of California were all good or great. Unfortunately, this gig in Sacramento marks the low point of the American tour, and this bootleg is one of the worst in the series. The band could be forgiven for fatigue (this was the 67th show in the tour), but they're also guilty of extreme laziness and carelessness tonight. Also, this show is one of the shortest in the tour and is a good 20 minutes shorter than average, as if they just gave up and left. The band did attempt to get creative with the set list, with several surprises and rarities. The surprise opener is "Whipping," which really gets the show off to a wild start. However, the momentum is immediately broken by the dreary "Insignificance." This song usually works well in the middle of the set, when it's time to get serious, but near the start of the show it's a total party pooper. The momentum is never quite recovered, and this show descends into a bottomless pit of errors and a general "who cares" attitude. "Tremor Christ" is terribly uncoordinated and just sounds sluggish, rather than sinister like it should. "Immortality" is mostly successful but breaks down in the outro when the band attempts to improvise a little. "Rearviewmirror" perks things up slightly, but once again things break down during an incredibly sluggish encore. Even Mike McCready's outro to "Yellow Ledbetter" is dull and uninspired, instead of the blazing display of riffsmanship that it usually is. For Pearl Jam, this probably felt like just one poor night, and the bootleg series proves that they were great 90% of the time. But the people who paid to see this show in Sacramento should have demanded a refund.

2 out of 5 stars better than in person, but ...   May 8, 2001
i, too, saw this show and didn't like it. it was the worst of the half-dozen times i've seen pearl jam. i didn't like the set list, the performance was average by pj standards, and it was a short set. that said, the concert is a much better experience in the warmth of my own home. and the show is good -- if there weren't four dozen better pearl jam live albums out there. save your money and get the las vegas show from eight days earlier or the san francisco show from one day later, to name just two far-better shows.
