Amazon.com While If You See Her and Tight Rope, their previous two albums, were Brooks & Dunn's strongest and most mature, their sales didn't earn either album the usual Gold and Platinum awards. Coincidentally, both CDs deemphasized the usual line-dance fodder, generic rockers, and flaccid ballads. On 2001's Steers & Stripes, the duo stays that course--to a point. "Ain't Nothin' 'Bout You" succeeds as the radio-friendly hit it was crafted to be but pales alongside the masterfully sung "Every River" and the classy ballads "The Long Goodbye" and "My Heart Is Lost to You." Smart Tejano arrangements spice up both the latter number and the witty "Deny, Deny, Deny." "Lucky Me, Lonely You" explores the time-honored shuffle turf of Ray Price and Buck Owens. Just as prominent, however, are Brooks & Dunn's sorties into bad old habits. "Only in America" overflows with tired clichés. The ballads "When She's Gone, She's Gone" and "Unloved" stumble over their own pretense. The witless dance ditties "Good Girls Go to Heaven" and "See Jane Dance" seem dated alongside the evocative, muscular David Lee Murphy rocker "The Last Thing I Do." The strengths here are potent indeed. Unfortunately, so are the weaknesses. --Rich Kienzle

this proves they are STILL the best duo in country music April 19, 2001 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
STEERS & STRIPES is loaded with top notch songs.AIN'T NOTHING BOUT YOU is by far the best thing going on country radio.Ronnie Dunn proves he is still country music's premier singer on the powerful ballad LONG GOODBYE.LAST THING I DO is a great country rocker that should burn up the charts.Kix Brooks vocals on GO WEST are very good.MY HEART IS LOST TO YOU and UNLOVED are typically great B & D ballads.LUCKY ME,LONELY YOU and especially EVERY RIVER are future hits as well.It seems to me that country music has taken Brooks and Dunn for granted for the last 2 or 3 years.STEERS & STRIPES is a welcome wake-up call for everybody who may have forgotten about Brooks and Dunn.
What a team! April 28, 2001 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I guess this is the part where I curse Montgomery Gentry for taking away B&D's "Due of the Year" award thing. Unfortunately, I like Montgomery Gentry. The next best thing I can do, however, is to rave about B&D's latest CD. "Only In America," the first track, is a wonderful modern-day "God Bless the USA." "The Last Thing I Do," "Good Girls Go To Heaven," and "See Jane Dance" give the CD a rockin' edge. On the flip side, "The Long Goodbye," "When She's Gone, She's Gone," and "I Fall" supply the mournful side, which fits wonderfully with the others. The rest of the songs fall in between, but are no less great. "Lucky Me, Lonely You" is a little more traditional for my tastes, but hey, it's Brooks & Dunn! "Ain't Nothing 'Bout You" just has a certain catch to it. "My Heart Is Lost To You" has a peculiar beat that I found interesting. "Go West" is just one of those songs that you could listen to for hours. There's nothing lacking on this new CD by masters of the industry. What are you waiting for? Grab "STEERS & STRIPES"--you won't regret it!
Great Brooks and Dunn CD!! April 21, 2001 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
BROOKS AND DUNN are back with steers and stripes with 14 songs I say 7 of them will be hit singles hopefully. Kix does pretty good on this cd with GO WEST, WHEN SHES GONE SHES GONE, DENY DENY DENY, I FALL AND SEE JANE DANCE. With ronnie singing songs: ONLY IN AMERICA, THE LAST THING I DO, THE LONG GOODBYE, MY HEART IS LOST TO YOU, GOOD GIRLS GO TO HEAVEN, AINT NOTHING ABOUT YOU, UNLOVED, LUCKY ME LONELY YOU, EVERY RIVER. Considering there last album tightrope didnt really do to good with this cd they are making up for it! tracks 1,2,4,8,14 are good songs to turn up on the stereo.
Best Country CD of 2001 August 9, 2001 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
Sorry Tim, the 'boys' are back in a big way. Just when Brooks and Dunn appeared predictable, they crank out their best piece of work since their debut. Great diversity in songs from the opening, extremely catchy 'Only in America' to the country-techno danceable "See Jane Dance", this is truly a collection of great tunes. Ronnie and Kix still rock out with "If It's the Last Thing I Do" and "Good Girls Go to Heaven" (Great encore tune), the killer ballads "Long Goodbye" and "Unloved", the humorous "Deny, Deny, Deny" and a fresh divergence - "My Heart Is Lost to You" with an addictive Latin flow to it. All this without even mentioning the #1 grove "Aint Nothing Bout You". Montgomery Gentry may have brought back 70's southern rock - but they can't hold a candle to Brooks and Dunn's musical diversity and vocal strength. Here's to a great tour, well-deserved record sales, and the best country release of 2001.
A Returning Fan Is Glad To Be Back April 17, 2001 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought "Brand New Man" not long after it came out and kinda lost track of this duo until deciding to purchase "Steers & Stripes". I'm very glad I made the buy. It's amazing how far Brooks & Dunn have come artistically then-til-now and the range of tracks on this album reflect it: From the satirical side of the lead track "Only In America", to the just plain fun "Deny, Deny, Deny" and "Good Girls Go To Heaven", to the love songs like "My Heart Is Lost To You" and "Ain't Nothing 'Bout You", to the absolute ache of "The Long Goodbye". I dare you to find a track that doesn't work. Great album. Great job, guys!
