    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.com
One listen to the eagerly anticipated third CD from the world's biggest girl group and it's clear there is one child with the most destiny. To paraphrase the hip-hop legends, "Who's house?" Beyoncé's house, and with the lead vocalist producing or cowriting all of the 14 tracks, it's hard to imagine what those other two chicks even do (other than act grateful to still have a gig). Seizing creative control is a bold move for Miss Knowles, and anytime an R&B act eschews the beat of the week, they have to be commended. But the problem is that Beyoncé, even with her ambition, has yet to suss out that the key to a pop-R&B smash is hook and melody. With the exception of the now-played-out title track (Can we all take a moratorium on this mighty goddess theme for a second, please?) and the equally you-go-girlish "Independent Woman Part 1," most of the tracks here lack a strong core. Beyoncé crams a litany of thoughts and motifs into her mini-anthems, with samples ranging from Stevie Nicks to Tarzan Boy, but though the cuts sizzle and sparkle and throw off much attitude, Survivor is way too frenetic. Even with some strong singing and songs (most notably the laid back "Fancy"), Survivor lacks real emotion. --Amy Linden

    1 out of 5 stars Destiny's Chickenheads   January 2, 2002

Destiny's Chickenheads, oops I mean Beyonce and 'Em are the wackest group out today. How could anyone who isn't tone deaf enjoy their music? The only decent song on Survivor was Independent Women. And that's a contradiction within itself because if it wasn't for Queen Beyonce's parents the three of them would be homeless, broke and naked. Oops, I forgot they don't wear much anyway. But oh yeah, they have that wonderful song called Nasty Girl which I think they should tribute to themselves. Queen Beyonce should have never kicked out LaToya and LaTavia. They made the group so much more attractive and they harmonized so much better. But now Beyonce and 'Em just look like a bunch of Yamps looking for more ways to dis the former members. And please please somebody tell Beyonce to go back to English class cause the girl can't even talk much less write. And I'm so sick and tired of them taking all the R&B awards when they are NOT an R&B group. They need to let Kelly and Michelle do some work, too. I mean they are part of the group aren't they? Well I hope Michelle has some work lined up just in case cause it won't be long before SHE'S on the unemployment line!

1 out of 5 stars How can I put this as nicely as possible?   August 15, 2002

I'll be blunt: I don't like this album.

I don't like the high-pitched voices that can't seem to match up with the beats.

I don't like the fact that the title track shamelessly tries to exploit both a certain reality series and the "girl power" movement, but is still the worst song I've ever heard, being the best example of the rhythmless, whiny vocals I mentioned above.

I don't like the blatant hypocrisy Destiny's Child flaunts about in this album. To have a single called "Bootylicious" as well as a medley of gospel songs on the same album is incredibly contradictory, and can only be explained as another attempt to pander to as many consumers as possible.

But finally, and most importantly, I despised this album so much when it came out that it was months before I would allow myself to listen to ANY R&B artist. Thanks to Destiny's Child, I nearly turned a blind eye to genuinely talented musicians like Alicia Keys and Musiq, and for that, I'm giving this album the lowest rating I can.

I'm sure the members of Destiny's Child are nice people, but this album simply stinks.

    1 out of 5 stars Not REAL R&B   May 5, 2001

Luckily I didn't purchase this album due to listening to a music store friend's store promo. Just for the record, this is NOT in any way, shape or form, REAL R&B. For those of you who don't know,REAL R&B is music that you will still be able to listen to 10 years from now. REAL R&B is Jill Scott, Musiq, India Arie, Maxwell, D'angelo, Eryakah Badu, Angie Stone, Rashaan Patterson. These people are simply in the business to make REAL music and not just to win Grammys and go platinum. Their music is simply timeless. Destiny's Childs' music is CHILDish POP mess. This cd just shows that once again their music has no substance. With songs like Bootylicious, Apple Pie A La Mode, and Mr.Peabody cartoon music samples, Beyonce needs to leave the writing and producing to someone else(Latoya & Latavia). If Destiny's Child want to be real SURVIVORS, they need to start producing real music. And what was the point of dissing the ex group members on the cd??? The Vibe article was bad enough. Just another example of what the name Destiny's Child really means: Destiny is CHILDish.

    2 out of 5 stars Destiny's StepChild - They need LeToyia & LeTavia back!   May 14, 2001

I was very dissappointed with this CD. I thought that it would be good because I liked Independent Woman and Survivor. If you want quality like TWOTW, then do NOT buy this! I'm not hatin' - I'm just stating my opinion. I WAS a big fan of DC, but I don't know anymore. They are NOT considered R&B anymore, they're pop. You will see their songs being played more on TRL, but it will not be on 106 & Park that much. There's a few good ones, but nothing like TWOTW.

Beyonce, you said in Survivor that you sold 9 million without the ex members? That's stupid - it was their voices on that album and Toyia wrote those songs. I'm pretty sure you will not sell 9 million with Survivor. DC needs to call their ex-members back and get them back in the group.

They have a song on their album called 'Nasty Girl' (this is actually one of the cuts I like), but they are contradicting themselves. They're saying that the girl is nasty because she is dressed provocative. Can they talk? They are performing half naked with their bodies busting out of their outfits.

I can definately see Beyonce going solo after this... like she isn't already... Ha! Ha! Honestly, I think that Kelly has a much better voice than Beyonce, but since Beyonce's dad is the manager, this is probably the most you'll hear from the "other" members.

I am looking forward to LeToyia and LeTavia's (the ex-members of DC) album. They're supposed to be coming out this summer. Their name is Angel and I heard that they're under So So Def. With that label and their writing skills (they displayed on TWOTW), their album should be hot.

Oh yeah, if you're still interested in buying 'Survivor', e-mail me. I'll sell you mine for a very generous price, or better yet, I'll give it to you!

    PEACE

1 out of 5 stars "Definately NOT Surviving!"   May 27, 2001

I told my husband that I wasn't going to buy this cd, because I didn't think it would be as good as their last one. Because my favorite song "Independent Women" was included on the cd, my husband bought it for me. After listening to it, he wished he hadn't. The best song on the cd was "Independent Women" and "Survivor" was nothing but a song dissing former members of the group. If you actually listen to the words, you would know that. On one of the verses Beyonce sings, "I wouldn't diss you on the internet, because my momma taught me better than that." Well, tell me Beyonce, "What's the difference in dissing someone on the internet and dissing them in a song?" Evidently, your momma didn't teach you all that well. Besides, they didn't say anything about you, the fans did enough of that on their own. In my opininon, this cd was just thrown together to cover up the fact that Beyonce is coming out with a solo project. After the first two songs, the album is terrible. I can't see how people could give this cd anything above a one star rating. One song does not make a cd worth buying.
