5 out of 5 stars Madonna The Cow Girl   August 3, 2003

In December 2000, Madonna released the second single (third if you include American Pie) from her smash-hit No.1 album Music. It was called Don't Tell Me and peaked at No.4 in the UK, spending 10 weeks on the chart. It had been a great year for Madonna, and she was on top of the world. Her Music album topped the charts in 26 countries worldwide, she scored massive international No.1 hits with American Pie and Music, she gave birth to her second child, and got married to Guy Ritchie in the biggest celebrity wedding of the new millennium.

Don't Tell Me starts wonderfully with a catchy guitar solo. The beat sounds distorted and faulty, but it's meant to sound like that. Madonna then starts singing the first verse, "Don't tell me to stop. Tell the rain not to drop. Tell the wind not to blow 'cos you said so. Mmmm. Tell the sun not to shine. Not to get up this time. No no. Let it fall by the way but don't leave me where I lay down." The lyrics are good and light-hearted with a hint of humour. Madonna then sings the chorus, "Tell me love isn't true. It's just something we do. Tell me everything I'm not but please don't tell me to stop." Madonna then sings the second verse, "Tell the leaves not to turn but don't ever tell me I'll learn. No no. Take the black off the crow but don't tell me I have to go. Tell the bed not to lay. Like the open mouth of a grave. Not to stare up at me like a calf down on its knees." Madonna then sings the chorus in a cappella, before a violin plays when she sings it another time. She then sings the chorus twice more, as the beat kicks in, before she sing a section of the second verse again, and a funky instrumental starts. The beat then ends, and a wonderful and epic violin solo is left to play the song out.

The video to Don't Tell Me is wonderful. While the video isn't as good as classics like Frozen and Ray Of Light, it is definitely a contended for the best video from the Music album. We see Madonna apparently walking down a country road in the middle of the desert, but as the camera pans out it turns out that Madonna is just walking on a treadmill in a studio as a screen moves behind her. It's a clever video, and features Madonna dressed like a cowgirl with cowboys dancing around her. The idea of Cowgirl Madonna a year previously would've been laughable by many, but she did it and it was a huge fashion craze. All in all, a fantastic Madonna song with an equally wonderful video.
